Brazilian payment for environmental services programs emphasize water-related services

Ingrid Mamedes et al.

Summary: Based on the principles of user pays and provider gets, Payment for Environmental Services (PES) provides economic incentives or compensation to land users who engage in activities promoting ecosystem services. Despite the rapid growth of PES initiatives in Brazil, there is a lack of comprehensive, up-to-date studies on these programs in the country. Through interviews and literature reviews, this study investigates the overview of PES in Brazil and identifies 80 implemented programs, with the majority concentrated in the Atlantic Forest and Savanna biomes in Southeastern Brazil. The main focus of these programs is on improving water quality and quantity, with proposed practices including reforestation, protection of native vegetation, and soil and water conservation. While Brazil's PES experiences have shown positive impacts, major limitations include lack of transparency and monitoring, as well as inequitable spatial and financial distribution.

Economic potential and management of tropical mixed-species plantations in Central America

Arne Pinnschmidt et al.

Summary: Tropical forest plantations are important for meeting global wood demand, and mixed-species plantations have ecological potential. However, research on the economic viability and management of these plantations is lacking. This study estimated the economic potential and optimized the management of commercial mixed-species plantations in Central America, finding that certain mixtures were highly profitable and could compete with monoculture plantations. The study also highlighted the additional ecosystem services provided by mixed-species plantations.

Beyond ecology: ecosystem restoration as a process for social-ecological transformation

Anazelia M. Tedesco et al.

Summary: Ecosystem restoration conventionally focuses on ecological targets, but it is necessary to integrate social, economic, and ecological dimensions, reconcile global targets and local objectives, and measure progress toward multiple goals. Restoration should be an inclusive social-ecological process that integrates diverse values and practices across scales and stakeholder groups. Taking a process-based approach will enable greater social-ecological transformation, restoration effectiveness, and long-lasting benefits.

The economic value of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest ecosystem services: A meta-analysis of the Brazilian literature

Roy Brouwer et al.

Summary: The study aims to evaluate the economic value of ecosystem services in the Brazilian Amazon by conducting a meta-analysis of the Brazilian valuation literature. The findings highlight the importance of preserving the Amazon forest based on local values. The review reveals a high degree of heterogeneity in study and data, and suggests the need for a more robust ecosystem services accounting and valuation framework.

Trends and knowledge gaps on ecological restoration research in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Talita Zupo et al.

Summary: Given the global environmental crisis, restoring degraded ecosystems in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest has become an important nature-based solution for mitigating climate change, maintaining biodiversity, and improving human well-being. A bibliometric analysis of research on restoration in this region revealed changing thematic trends over time, with natural regeneration, forest succession, and ecosystem services emerging as key topics. Collaboration between Brazilian and foreign research groups has increased, resulting in highly cited publications. However, both research and restoration initiatives are unevenly distributed, with the southeastern region of Brazil standing out. Knowledge gaps identified, such as climate change and functional traits, should be prioritized in research funding to support decision-making and restoration practices.

Should payments for environmental services be used to implement zero-deforestation supply chain policies? The case of soy in the Brazilian Cerrado

R. D. Garrett et al.

Summary: In the past decade, various policy approaches have been developed to address deforestation caused by agriculture in global supply chains. Although payments for environmental services (PES) have been considered as an efficient and pro-poor environmental policy, they have faced criticism for their mixed outcomes. This study finds that a combination of market exclusion and positive incentives targeted at the poorest farmers would be more effective, cost-effective, equitable, and legitimate in addressing deforestation.

Economic Feasibility of Tropical Forest Restoration Models Based on Non-Timber Forest Products in Brazil, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Peru

Pedro Gasparinetti et al.

Summary: This study explores forest restoration models in tropical forests in Brazil, Peru, Cambodia, and Indonesia, and proposes a solution of combining native species with non-timber forest products (NTFP) species. The findings suggest that restoration models with economic purposes have potential economic feasibility, indicating promising business cases for private investment in tropical forest restoration.

Tree diversity and timber productivity in planted forests: Pinus patula versus mixed cloud forest species

Alma L. Trujillo-Miranda et al.

Summary: Planted forests, particularly in tropical montane cloud forest landscapes, are important for timber production and biodiversity. However, differences in tree diversity, productivity, and net revenues were observed between Pinus patula and mixed TMCF species planted forests in southern Mexico. Management strategies that promote a diverse mix of native seedlings and stimulate the market for native species may help mitigate biodiversity loss in TMCF landscapes.

Effects on Global Forests and Wood Product Markets of Increased Demand for Mass Timber

Prakash Nepal et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of three contrasting mass timber demand scenarios on global forest resources and product markets, finding increases in softwood lumber production and prices under different scenarios. The projected increase in softwood lumber prices due to increased mass timber demand may lead to reduced consumption for traditional end-uses and strong market competition between the mass timber and traditional construction industries. However, the projected effect on global forest stock was relatively small due to fast projected biomass growth in regenerated stands.

Implementing forest landscape restoration in Latin America: Stakeholder perceptions on legal frameworks

Daniella Schweizer et al.

Summary: This paper examines the perceptions of stakeholders from 17 Latin American countries on the legal frameworks affecting national forest landscape restoration interventions, finding that there is a lack of articulation in the legal frameworks to enable coordinated deployment of various forest restoration interventions. Efforts in some countries such as Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico to improve cross-sectorial communication and develop innovative financial mechanisms were highlighted, but challenges including weak implementation capacities, insufficient funding, and social conflicts remain as key impediments for policy implementation.
