Covalent Organic Frameworks as Porous Pigments for Photocatalytic Metal-Free C-H Borylation

Ananda Basak et al.

Summary: In this study, highly stable beta-keto-enamine-based COFs were reported as photo catalysts for metal-free C-B bond formation reactions. Three different COFs were used and their photocatalysis performances were monitored for 12 different substrates. The COFs showed moderate-to-high yields (up to 96%) depending on the substrate's molecular functionality. TpAzo COF exhibited the highest catalytic activity due to its high crystallinity, large surface area, low band gap, and suitable band position. The light absorbance capacity of the COFs played a crucial role during catalysis, as yields were maximized near the COF's absorption maxima. The synthesized COFs showed high photostability and could be reused for multiple (>5) catalytic cycles.

Photo-triggered full-color circularly polarized luminescence based on photonic capsules for multilevel information encryption

Siyang Lin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of device-friendly solid films with color tunability by utilizing Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) platforms consisting of chiral donors and achiral molecular switches in liquid crystal photonic capsules (LCPCs). These LCPCs exhibit photoswitchable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from blue emission to RGB trichromatic signals under UV irradiation, showing strong time dependence due to different FRET efficiencies at each time node. Based on these properties, the concept of multilevel data encryption using LCPC films is demonstrated.

Modulating the Macroscopic Helicity of Poly(m-phenylenediamine) by Achiral Monomer Copolymerization

Xinlin Zha et al.

Summary: Designing artificial systems to mimic chiral superstructures and investigating the modulation of chirality by achiral molecules is important for understanding the origin of homochirality in nature. In this study, the tunability of supramolecular chirality is applied to fabricate chiral covalent polymers with controlled helicity. By introducing small amounts of achiral diaminopyridines (DAPs) during the copolymerization process, chiral copolymers with adjustable helical configurations and chiroptical activities can be obtained. The hydrogen bonding between DAPs and template molecules is found to be the driving force for the chiral polymerization. Additionally, a library of helical functional copolymers, including conducting polymers and condensation-based polymers, can be built using this copolymerization strategy.

Self-Assembly of Helical Nanofibrous Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks

Xihao Tang et al.

Summary: Two chiral covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with well-defined one-handed double-helical nanofibrous morphologies were successfully constructed using a template-free method based on the diastereoselective formation of aminal linkages. Time-dependent experiments revealed the spontaneous transformation of initial rod-like aggregates into the double-helical microstructures. The helical chirality and circular dichroism signal can be easily reversed by adjusting the amount of acetic acid during synthesis. Furthermore, the helical COF nanostructures were able to induce circularly polarized luminescence with a high luminescent asymmetric factor (g(lum)) of approximately 0.01 by transferring chirality to achiral fluorescent molecular adsorbents.

Supramolecular mineralization strategy for engineering covalent organic frameworks with superior Zn-I2 battery performances

Wenda Li et al.

Summary: By pre-assembly and subsequent in situ covalent locking of supramolecules, we developed a supramolecular mineralization strategy for controllable fabrication of semiconducting COF nanoarchitectures. This strategy allows us to change the dynamic covalent chemistry reaction path by reducing the entropy of the system, thus facilitating control over the growth and crystallization of COFs on demand (including 1D, 2D, etc.). The tailor-made COF can effectively suppress the shuttle effect and accelerate the conversion of polyiodide through strong intrinsic electron-pair induce interactions, thereby delivering an outstanding performance in zinc-iodine batteries.

Covalent organic frameworks

Ke Tian Tan et al.

Summary: Chemical approaches play a crucial role in the design, synthesis, control and engineering of small molecules, polymers and networks, combining covalent bonds and non-covalent interactions to establish complex structures for specific functions. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline porous polymers that integrate organic units into highly ordered structures through polymerization using covalent bonds for primary order structures and non-covalent interactions for high order structures in a one-pot reaction system. This Primer provides a comprehensive overview of the field of COFs, covering chemistry, physics, materials and applications, aiming to present a concise yet complete picture of the field and addressing key fundamental issues with future directions in mind.
