Multipathogen infections and multifactorial pathogenesis involved in noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis) mass mortality events: Background and current pathologic approaches

Francesca Carella et al.

Summary: In recent years, disease outbreaks have caused mass mortality events in ecologically or commercially important invertebrate marine species worldwide. The noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis) has been severely affected, approaching extinction. The causative agent initially focused on a novel protozoan parasite, Haplosporidium pinnae, but further investigations revealed the importance of concurrent polymicrobial infections. Bacteria from the Mycobacterium simiae complex and Vibrio mediterranei-like species were found in moribund specimens during mortality events in Italy, Greece, and Spain. The standardization of diagnostic processes for investigating mass mortality events is crucial and requires experts in veterinary and para-veterinary pathology.

Wide-Geographic and Long-Term Analysis of the Role of Pathogens in the Decline of Pinna nobilis to Critically Endangered Species

Amalia Grau et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of various pathogens in the mass mortality event (MME) of the fan mussel Pinna nobilis in the Mediterranean Sea. The researchers found that infection by Haplosporidium pinnae played a major role in the onset and spread of the MME, while infection with mycobacteria was independent of the MME and associated with host size. Gram (-) bacteria were not associated with the MME.

Summary: This study investigates the distribution of P. nobilis along the Occitan coast and identifies the Thau and Salses-Leucate lagoons as essential refuges for the survival of the species. The study also reveals the species' ability to colonize diverse habitats.

Genetic homogeneity of the critically endangered fan mussel, Pinna nobilis, throughout lagoons of the Gulf of Lion (North-Western Mediterranean Sea)

Claire Peyran et al.

Summary: The study found that the genetic structure of the Mediterranean fan mussel population is highly consistent across various locations in the Gulf of Lion, indicating that genetic diversity is preserved, possibly due to isolated lagoons providing refuge habitats for the future of the species.

Fine-tuning biodiversity assessments: A framework to pair eDNA metabarcoding and morphological approaches

Catia Lucio Pereira et al.

Summary: Accurate quantification of biodiversity can be challenging and costly, with environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding offering a potential solution. However, combining eDNA metabarcoding with morphological data can enhance taxonomic resolution and accuracy in assigning species traits and abundance. This integrated approach demonstrates the potential for improving biodiversity assessments through the complementary use of traditional and modern methods.
