Not Their Fault, but Their Problem: Organizational Responses to the Online Harassment of Journalists

Summary: Journalists are increasingly experiencing online harassment, leading to fatigue, anxiety, disconnection from social media, and dissatisfaction with the profession. This study identifies three forms of harassment: acute, chronic, and escalatory. Women journalists, in particular, are more likely to experience chronic and escalatory forms. News organizations are criticized for not adequately addressing harassment, forcing journalists to find their own coping mechanisms. It is essential for news organizations to address harassment as a systemic issue in order to protect journalists' mental health and well-being.

The main argument is that the identity of a journalist as a place of oppression intersects with other identities of oppression, resulting in unique context-based experiences. The objective is to unify work in this growing field with a critical foundation.

Worsening Safety Conditions for Women Journalists in Turkey's Alternative News Media

Summary: This study adopts a postcolonial feminist approach to examine the gender-based safety problems faced by women journalists working for alternative media in Turkey. It reveals that security forces and arbitrary judicial sanctions pose significant safety threats to these journalists, while an authoritarian government controls and oversees these attacks. Additionally, the study finds that the unsustainable working conditions in alternative news media further exacerbate the challenges faced by women journalists. However, women journalists remain resilient and motivated by considering journalism as an important tool for empowerment, supported by the feminist movement.

A 20-year stocktake of Aotearoa New Zealand's performance in the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP): Feminisation of the newsroom but still not gender parity

Summary: Aotearoa New Zealand is often seen as a leader in gender equity, but data from the Global Media Monitoring Project show that gender imbalances persist in the news sector, especially in sports reporting. Despite improvements in gender balance in the journalistic workforce, there has been limited progress in terms of sources and subjects in news stories. Young women are easily recruited into journalism, but their pay, influence, and prospects for promotion remain restricted. Progress towards gender equity has been made in NZ, but there is still much more to be done.
