Health behaviors and multimorbidity associated with bruxism: Population-based study

Bruna Kelly Fehlberg et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of possible bruxism in the adult population of Campinas, Brazil and its association with health behaviors, health status, and multimorbidity. The findings revealed associations between possible bruxism and alcohol consumption, sleep quality, and the number of chronic diseases/health problems. Bruxism was also found to be more associated with multimorbidity pattern 2, which included asthma, rhinitis, sinusitis, dizziness/vertigo, migraine/headache, emotional/mental problem, back pain, and allergy.

Standardised Tool for the Assessment of Bruxism

Daniele Manfredini et al.

Summary: This paper presents and describes a standardized tool for the assessment of bruxism (STAB), which aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of bruxism status, comorbid conditions, etiology, and consequences. The tool consists of two axes, including self-reported information, clinical assessment, and instrumental assessment. It includes 14 domains with a total of 66 items.

Diagnostic accuracy of a portable device (Bruxoff®) to measure sleep bruxism

Fernanda Yanez-Regonesi et al.

Summary: Diagnosis of sleep bruxism poses a challenge due to the variety of assessment tools available. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of the Bruxoff device for diagnosing sleep bruxism compared to polysomnography. The results showed acceptable accuracy and a significant correlation between the two methods, suggesting that the Bruxoff device holds promise as a diagnostic tool.

The impact of sleep components, quality and patterns on glymphatic system functioning in healthy adults: A systematic review

L. Sangalli et al.

Summary: This systematic review explores the impact of sleep components, sleep quality, and sleep patterns on outcomes associated with the glymphatic system in healthy adults. The findings reveal contradictory results based on different sleep assessment methods, indicating a lack of understanding regarding the specific association between sleep parameters and the glymphatic system in healthy adults.

Network analysis of sleep bruxism in the EPISONO adult general population

Thiprawee Chattrattrai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations of self-reported sleep bruxism with other sleep disorders and demographic, psychological, and lifestyle factors in the adult general population. The results showed that self-reported sleep bruxism was only significantly associated with sex, anxiety, and depression, while polysomnographically confirmed sleep bruxism was not associated with any of the included factors.

A polysomnographic study on the relationship between sleep bruxism intensity and sleep quality

Joanna Smardz et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation between Bruxism Episodes Index (BEI) and sleep quality as measured by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The analysis showed no significant correlation between BEI and PSQI scores, and there was also no significant difference in PSQI scores between bruxers and non-bruxers. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between sleep quality and the occurrence of sleep bruxism.

Symptoms of Nocturnal Masticatory Muscle Activity among Women of Different Age Groups and Their Association to Obstructive Sleep Apnea-A Cross Sectional Study

Alona Emodi-Perlman et al.

Summary: Sleep bruxism, snoring, and excessive daytime sleepiness are common symptoms associated with obstructive sleep apnea. In a study of Arab women, those who reported snoring showed a higher prevalence of sleep bruxism, headaches, and muscle stiffness upon awakening. These symptoms can be early indicators of OSA, with higher awareness by dentists potentially preventing harmful conditions associated with the disorder.

Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) responses are modulated by total sleep time and wake after sleep onset in healthy older adults

Jennifer Zitser et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the objective sleep influencers behind older adult responses to subjective sleep measures, specifically the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The results showed that wake after sleep onset (WASO), sleep efficiency (SE), and total sleep time (TST) were associated with subjective sleep disturbance measured by the PSQI. These findings suggest that objective sleep parameters can influence the subjective assessment of sleep quality in older adults.

Ivana Meyer Prado et al.

Summary: The study found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a strong association between decreased sleep quality and sleep bruxism activity among university students. Factors such as smartphone addiction, gender, having children, and participation in distance learning also played a role in influencing sleep bruxism.

Summary: A scoping review of English-language literature was conducted to investigate the relationship between sleep bruxism (SB) and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), highlighting the varying findings between questionnaire/self-report studies and instrumental studies on the association with TMD pain. Future research should consider SB as a multifaceted motor behavior that requires evaluation across a continuum spectrum.
