Specificity of epistemic beliefs across school subject domains

Detlef Urhahne et al.

Summary: Based on the theory of integrated domains in epistemology, this study investigated the domain specificity of epistemic beliefs from a comprehensive perspective. Intraindividual differences in epistemic beliefs about natural, mathematical, social, and linguistic sciences were examined among 196 pre-service teachers using a reliable epistemic belief questionnaire. The findings revealed significant differences in all four epistemic dimensions across the four domains, providing strong evidence for the domain specificity of epistemic beliefs and emphasizing the need for a classification system in personal epistemology.
