Polyketides with antimicrobial activities from Penicillium canescens DJJ-1

Jia-Peng Wang et al.

Summary: Two undescribed polyketides, canecines A-B, and one unreported cyclopentenone, canecine C, along with 12 known compounds, were isolated from a fungus called Penicillium canescens DJJ-1. Spectroscopic data analysis, NMR calculations, and quantum chemical calculations were used to determine their structures and absolute configurations. Canecine A, a grisan polyketide with a dimethyltetrahydro-4H-furo[2,3-b]pyran, showed significant inhibitory activity against Candida albicans and inhibited nitric oxide production in LPS-activated RAW264.7 macrophages. These findings contribute to the diversification of polyketide structures from endophytic fungi.

Penicillium brevicompactum as a novel source of natural pigments with potential for food applications

Carla S. Fonseca et al.

Summary: Synthetic colorants are being replaced by natural pigments, and filamentous fungi have gained attention as a source of natural pigments. However, the biosynthesis of mycotoxins limits their practical use. In this study, Penicillium brevicompactum was evaluated for the production of pigments using submerged fermentation. Optimal conditions were determined, and a mixture of mycotoxin-free pigments with promising antioxidant activity and stability was obtained. P. brevicompactum is considered a safe source of natural pigments with interesting properties for the food industry.
