Comparative Antioxidant, Anti-Acetylcholinesterase and Anti-α-Glucosidase Activities of Mediterranean Salvia Species

Mateja Mervic et al.

Summary: The present study evaluated and compared the biological activities of seven wild-growing Salvia species from the Mediterranean area. The results showed that these sage plants possessed significant antioxidant, neuroprotective, and hypoglycemic activities. The leaves of Salvia plants contained rich levels of total flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, and anthocyanins, with rosmarinic acid being the predominant hydroxycinnamic acid. The study also found a strong correlation between the biological activities and the contents of total phenolic acids, total tannins, and rosmarinic acid in the Salvia species.

Chemical profiling, antioxidant, enzyme inhibitory and in silico modeling of Rosmarinus officinalis L. and Artemisia herba alba Asso. essential oils from Algeria

Benabdallah Amina et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical composition, antioxidant, alpha-glucosidase, alpha-amylase, and cholinesterase inhibitory activities of wormwood and rosemary essential oils. Molecular docking tools were used to explain the interaction between chemical constituents and enzymes. The results showed that rosemary oil had higher antioxidant and cholinesterase inhibitory activities, while wormwood oil was more effective against antidiabetic inhibitory enzymes. Molecular modeling verified the strong binding affinity of certain chemical compounds from rosemary with the studied enzymes. These findings contribute to the understanding of the biological activities of rosemary and wormwood and their potential applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
