Effective removal of ammonia from aqueous solution through struvite synthesis and breakpoint chlorination: Insights into the synergistic effects of the hybrid system

Muyahavho Enemiah Mugwili et al.

Summary: The ever-growing contamination of surface water due to various catchment activities poses threats and stress to downstream water treatment entities. Specifically, the presence of ammonia, microbial contaminants, organic matter, and heavy metals has been an issue of paramount concern to water treatment entities since stringent regulatory frameworks require these pollutants to be removed prior to water consumption. Herein, a hybrid approach that integrates struvite crystallization (precipitation) and breakpoint chlorination (stripping) for the removal of ammonia from aqueous solution was evaluated. Overall, synergistic and complementary effects of integrating struvite synthesis and breakpoint chlorination hold great promise for the removal of ammonia from aqueous solutions thus confirming that this technology could potentially be used to curtail the effects of ammonia in the receiving environments and drinking water.

An experimental study on recovering and concentrating ammonia by sweep gas membrane distillation

Zhan Li et al.

Summary: Ammonia is a toxic and hazardous substance, but it can also be a valuable chemical. Industrial wastewater often contains high concentrations of soluble gaseous ammonia. By utilizing the vapor-liquid equilibrium of the ammonia-water binary system, it is possible to recover and concentrate ammonia from these wastewater through sweep gas membrane distillation (SGMD). This study demonstrates the ammonia recovery process using SGMD and investigates the effects of different operating conditions on its performance.

Sulfate removal from the seawater using single-chamber bioelectrochemical system

Jing Huang et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of removing sulfate from seawater using a bio-electrochemical system. The results showed that 98.5% of sulfate could be efficiently removed within 132 hours. The study also found that the electricity consumption in the bio-electrochemical system was lower compared to membrane technology, indicating its potential as a promising method for seawater utilization in the industry.

Membrane Distillation for Wastewater Treatment: A Mini Review

Zhongsen Yan et al.

Summary: Water is an essential part of human life and production, with a growing demand for wastewater recycling due to the overexploitation of traditional water sources. Membrane distillation (MD) has been widely used in various wastewater treatments but faces challenges such as membrane fouling, membrane wetting, and high energy consumption. Strategies including coupling membrane processes and developing membranes with specific surface characteristics have been adopted to enhance MD performance.

Neha Sharma et al.

Summary: This study compared the nature of DOM in samples collected from drinking water and wastewater treatment plants in western India, finding that water samples consist mostly of humic-like components while wastewater was dominated by protein-like components. The study also showed that the hydrophobic acid and neutral fractions of DOM were primarily responsible for THM formation.
