Effects of process parameters on friability and surface quality in the rapid investment casting process

Konstantin Fedorov et al.

Summary: This research investigates surface erosion of ceramic shells in the rapid investment casting (RIC) process using a friability test and microscopy analysis. The impact of different pattern materials, shell facecoat composition, and burnout temperature is explored. Results show that among 3D printing feedstock, ABS produces the most surface erosion, while PVB is the least and is comparable to conventional foundry wax. The absence of stucco in the facecoat reduces friability, and burnout temperature has a varying effect on friability depending on the pattern material.

Recoater-Induced Distortions and Build Failures in Selective Laser Melting of Thin-Walled Ti6Al4V Parts

Xufei Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the challenges of residual stresses, warpage, and recoater crashes in selective laser melting (SLM) of thin-walled structures. It develops a numerical model to simulate the SLM process and enhances it with recoater effects. The study finds that higher laser energy input results in larger residual stresses and warpage, leading to recoater crashes. Potential solutions to mitigate warpage and recoater crashes are assessed using the validated model.

Porosity, microstructure and mechanical property of welded joints produced by different laser welding processes in selective laser melting AlSi10Mg alloys

Li Cui et al.

Summary: The susceptibility to hydrogen pores in the welded joints of SLM AlSi10Mg alloys was investigated through different welding methods. It was found that autogenous laser welding and single-pass laser welding had a high sensitivity to hydrogen pores, while LMD welding effectively reduced the size and porosity of the pores. SLM AlSi10Mg alloys exhibited lower hardness and ultimate tensile strength in laser welding compared to LMD welding, which can be attributed to the refined microstructures and reduced hydrogen pores in the welded metal.

Effects of Power and Laser Speed on the Mechanical Properties of AlSi7Mg0.6 Manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

Sebastien Vaudreuil et al.

Summary: The AlSi7Mg0.6 alloy is commonly used in LPBF for aerospace engineering parts with complex geometries. This study evaluated the influence of laser parameters on mechanical properties and identified an optimal processing region. Results showed that laser power and scanning speed had a significant impact on mechanical properties, while the laser strategy had limited influence. Surface plots revealed a region of higher mechanical properties when using specific energy densities. Optimal performance was achieved by combining mid-speed and power within this region.
