Rheotaxis of sperm in fertile and infertile men

Timor M. El-Sherry et al.

Summary: Sperm rheotaxis, the ability of sperm cells to align their swimming direction with or against fluid flow, is found to be correlated with male fertility. By utilizing a microfluidic platform, the motion of sperm cells in fluid environments can be detected and analyzed, serving as a potential marker for male fertility.

Gastrointestinal-Peristalsis-Inspired Hydrogel Actuators for NIR-Controlled Transport of Viscous Liquids

Liyun Zhang et al.

Summary: Inspired by gastrointestinal peristalsis, researchers have designed and constructed double-layered tubular hydrogel actuators for the directional transport of highly viscous liquids. The actuators can transport liquids with viscosities ranging from approximately 1000 mPa s to >80000 mPa s under the control of an 808 nm laser. This work expands the research scope of liquid transportation and has potential applications in viscous-liquid-based microfluidics, artificial blood vessels, and soft robots.

Design and fabrication of aspiration microfluidic channel for oocyte characterization

H. Saffari et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of oocytes can predict their development potential. This study introduces a new microfluidic chip design to measure the cortical tension (CT) of oocytes and predict their maturation capability in the germinal vesicle (GV) stage. The proposed technique offers simpler operation, less specialized equipment, and faster measurements compared to traditional methods such as micro-pipette aspiration (MPA).

Escaping Behavior of Sperms on the Biomimetic Oviductal Surface

Sai-Xi Yu et al.

Summary: Before fertilization, only a limited number of winner sperms can escape from the oviductal surface to reach the egg. By using a microfluidic chip, researchers mimicked the oviduct microenvironment and identified three motion patterns of sperm escape. The study revealed the role of rotational energy in determining whether a sperm is trapped or detaching, and the hammer-throw escaping strategy triggered by biochemical stimulation.

Viscoelastic Properties of Zona Pellucida of Oocytes Characterized by Transient Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy

Danyil Azarkh et al.

Summary: The success of in vitro fertilization is closely related to the quality of the oocytes. The oocyte's outer membrane, called zona pellucida, undergoes dynamic changes during the reproductive cycle. Monitoring the hardening process of the zona pellucida is crucial for successful fertilization. In this study, two genetic mouse models with different zona pellucida properties were studied using a microfluidic aspiration-assisted electrical impedance spectroscopy system to evaluate the mechanical properties of oocytes.

Oocytes evaluation and in-vitro fertilization/ intra cytoplasmic sperm injection outcomes

Maria Giulia Minasi et al.

Summary: There are currently no definitive criteria for evaluating the quality and competence of oocytes. Advanced maternal age is a major factor leading to low oocyte quality, and other factors such as obesity, lifestyle, genetic and systemic pathologies, ovarian stimulation protocols, laboratory procedures, culture, and environmental conditions may also influence oocyte competence. Morphological and maturational evaluation of oocytes is the most commonly used method. Other criteria such as cumulus cell abnormalities and organelle aggregation are also associated with embryo developmental potential. However, many evaluation methods are still limited to research and have not been widely applied in clinical practice. Therefore, oocyte morphology and maturity remain important indicators for assessing oocyte quality.

Lars Bjorndahl et al.

Summary: The principles of basic semen investigation are crucial for obtaining reliable and internationally comparable results. However, many studies and practices in reproductive medicine fail to adhere to these principles, leading to a lack of comparable data and accuracy. To address this issue, the sixth edition of the WHO manual introduces revised methods and a complementary formal standard from the International Standards Organization. The new edition also reintroduces the four-category distinction of sperm motility and emphasizes the importance of semen examination for assessing male reproductive functions and overall male health.
