Authoritarianism and Immigration Attitudes in the UK

Adam Peresman et al.

Summary: This article examines the impact of right-wing authoritarianism on immigration attitudes in the UK, finding that cultural aspects of immigration are crucial in shaping anti-immigrant sentiments. The study concludes that right-wing authoritarianism is a stronger predictor of immigration attitudes than other attributes, with the aggression component playing a significant role in driving these effects, particularly against immigrant groups that may be perceived as culturally distant.

Welcome in my back yard? Explaining cross-municipal opposition to refugees through outgroup size, outgroup proximity, and economic conditions

David De Coninck et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contextual sources of attitudes towards refugees by examining the influence of outgroup size, outgroup proximity, economic conditions, and their interaction. The findings show that proximity to an asylum seekers centre and higher average taxable income of residents are associated with positive attitudes towards refugees, while changes in outgroup size have no impact on attitudes in this sample. Additionally, the study reveals that the positive impact of educational attainment on attitudes is amplified (weakened) in municipalities with a larger (smaller) refugee and asylum seeker group size.
