Microfiber Bragg Grating Bonded Using Tapered Cantilever for High-Sensitivity Ultrasonic Detection

Hanqi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a microfiber Bragg grating (MFBG) bonded using tapered cantilever was designed and investigated using experimental, theoretical, and numerical methods. The tapered structure amplified the ultrasonic signal and eliminated the influences of static strain and evanescent field using the cantilever. Compared to the cantilevered fiber Bragg grating, the sensitivity of the sensor showed an upward trend with decreasing diameter, with 331% and 108% sensitivity increments observed for MFBGs with 20 and 40 μm diameters, respectively. The improvement was particularly apparent at high frequencies of the ultrasonic signal.

Static and ultrasonic structural health monitoring of full-size aerospace multi-function capsule using FBG strain arrays and PSFBG acoustic emission sensors

Hanqi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, an integrated static and ultrasonic structural health monitoring (SHM) was developed using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) arrays and phase-shifted FBG (PSFBG) sensors to monitor a full-size aerospace multi-function capsule under varying load. The FBG and PSFBG were bonded using direct and remote adhesive methods, respectively, to ensure the performance of the integrated SHM. The FBG arrays and PSFBG sensors performed well for the integrated SHM, alerting the unhealthy status of the aerospace structure before catastrophic failure.

Porosity Evaluation of Composites Using the Encapsulated Cantilever Fiber Bragg Grating Based Acousto-Ultrasonic Method

Hanqi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the high ultrasonic sensing performance of an encapsulated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a cantilever structure and its application in evaluating the porosity of composite materials. The accuracy and reliability of the proposed acousto-ultrasonic method for evaluating porosity are experimentally validated. The sensor also retains its temperature sensing capability.
