Silicon mode-loop Mach-Zehnder modulator with L-shaped PN junction for 0.37 V.cm VπL high-efficiency modulation

Jiacheng Liu et al.

Summary: In this work, a silicon mode-loop Mach-Zehnder modulator (ML-MZM) with record-high modulation efficiency is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The use of a mode-loop structure and an L-shaped PN junction enables efficient optical signaling without a high voltage driver, opening up possibilities for CMOS-compatible driverless modulation.

Low VπLπ and Driving Voltage Interleaved Silicon Phase Shifter for Modulation Applications

Amir Begovic et al.

Summary: Interleaved doped Mach-Zehnder Modulators (MZMs) are a solution for achieving higher modulation efficiencies. In this study, a design and process simulation for an interleaved Si modulator device was presented, and the modulation efficiency was calculated using Monte Carlo simulation method. The results showed that the modulator has achieved high modulation efficiency.

Recent Progress in Silicon-Based Slow-Light Electro-Optic Modulators

Changhao Han et al.

Summary: Silicon photonics, as an important optoelectronic integration platform, has advantages of low power consumption, low cost, and CMOS compatibility. However, conventional silicon modulators have limitations, leading to the need for new structures to improve their performance. Slow-light effect, which reduces the group velocity of light, is an attractive research point for reducing the device footprint. This paper reviews the recent progress of silicon-based slow-light electro-optic modulators and discusses the challenges and development directions for practical applications.

High-speed compact folded Michelson interferometer modulator

Ruogu Song et al.

Summary: We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel compact folded Michelson interferometer (FMI) modulator with high modulation efficiency and small footprint. This modulator, by folding the phase shift arms and using shorter traveling wave electrode (TWE), reduces the propagation loss of the RF signal and exhibits excellent performance including low V p -L, low optical insertion loss, high extinction ratio, and wide bandwidth.

Challenges in silicon photonics modulators for data center interconnect applications

Diego M. Dourado et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for bandwidth in data centers requires high-performance optical modulators to meet the needs for high bandwidth, low optical loss, and low power consumption. Silicon modulators have the potential to fulfill these requirements, but there are still challenges in designing devices that can simultaneously meet all these criteria. This paper reviews the challenges in Silicon photonics modulators for data center interconnect applications.
