Series-connected solar array for high-speed underwater wireless optical links

Zhijian Tong et al.

Summary: Solar panels are increasingly used for detection in underwater wireless optical communication systems. However, the limited bandwidth of solar panels optimized for energy harvesting is a major challenge. This study proposes series-connected solar arrays to achieve high-speed underwater detection and improves the frequency response through array size increase and reverse bias. The proposed system achieves the highest bandwidth among reported solar panel-based communication systems and demonstrates the potential of off-the-shelf solar cells in high data rate UWOC systems.

Addressing gain-bandwidth trade-off by a monolithically integrated photovoltaic transistor

Yuanzhe Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a monolithically integrated photovoltaic transistor is proposed to overcome the trade-off between response speed and gain in high-performance photodetectors. By optimizing the processing, the device achieves high responsivity, specific detectivity, and a wide bandwidth. Moreover, the device demonstrates advantages in photoplethysmography detection with weak illuminations by accurately detecting detailed features.

On the Nonlinear Distortion Characterization in Photovoltaic Modules for Visible Light Communication

Shuyan Chen et al.

Summary: PV modules are used for both energy harvesting and data reception in visible light communication (VLC), but exhibit exacerbated nonlinear distortion under typical indoor illumination, with different characteristics for varying numbers of PV cells. Experimental results show an optimal illuminance to minimize bit-error rate (BER), and two distortion mitigation methods are proposed, achieving significant BER reduction.

Organic photovoltaics for simultaneous energy harvesting and high-speed MIMO optical wireless communications

Iman Tavakkolnia et al.

Summary: It is shown that organic photovoltaics (OPVs) are suitable for high-speed optical wireless data receivers that can also harvest power, particularly for indoor applications. By selecting a suitable combination of materials, stable OPVs are fabricated with high power conversion efficiency, achieving a high data rate and simultaneous harvested power in an optical wireless communication experiment.

Energy harvesting optical modulators with subattojoule per bit electrical energy consumption

M. de Cea et al.

Summary: In this study, a silicon modulator using the photovoltaic effect is demonstrated with extremely low electrical energy consumption, suitable for massively parallel input/output systems like neural interfaces. By leveraging parasitic photovoltaic current to self-charge the modulator and using a single transistor to modulate stored charge, energy dissipation is significantly reduced. This work showcases the potential of integrated electronics and photonics for achieving optical switching with minimal energy consumption.
