Efficient separation of high-abundance rare earth element yttrium and lanthanides by solvent extraction using 2-(bis((2-ethylhexyl)oxy) phosphoryl)-2-hydroxyacetic acid

Jinglu Han et al.

Summary: In order to overcome the drawbacks of the commonly used naphthenic acid (NA) system for yttrium (Y) separation, a novel extractant, 2-(bis((2-ethylhexyl)oxy)phosphoryl)-2-hydroxy-acetic acid (HPOAc, HL), was designed and synthesized by combining the functional groups of commercial organophosphorus extractants, carboxylic acids, and alcohol phase modifiers. HPOAc showed higher extraction ability for REEs(III) and better performance in the separation of Ln(III) and Y(III) compared to NA and CA-12. A cascade extraction process using HPOAc as the extractant was developed, achieving a Y product with a purity of 99.31 wt% through 20 stages of extraction and 4 stages of scrubbing.

Selective separation of lanthanide group in spent NiMH battery acidic leaching solutions

Jenni Lie et al.

Summary: A novel selective separation method for lanthanide group (La, Ce, and Nd) from acidic leaching solutions of spent NiMH batteries using disodium phosphate as precipitation agent at low pH was investigated. The recovery efficiency of lanthanides increased with decreasing molar ratio of lanthanides to phosphate ions (Ln/P) and increasing pH and temperature. The separation process demonstrated high efficiency and selectivity for critical rare metals recovery from spent NiMH batteries.

Rapid unseparated rare earth element analyses by isotope dilution multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ID-MC-ICP-MS)

Steve Shen et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for analyzing rare earth elements (REEs) by isotope dilution without the need for separating individual elements, demonstrating its reliability and accuracy. Compared to traditional methods, this approach eliminates time-consuming REE separation steps while ensuring the accuracy and stability of the analysis results.

Prompt digestion and HPIC separation of rare earth elements in surrogate post-detonation debris material with detection by ICP-MS and gamma spectroscopy

V. C. Bradley et al.

Summary: Prompt analysis of fission products and rare earth elements in post-detonation nuclear debris is critical for nuclear forensic analysis. This study examined the compatibility of ammonium biflouoride fusion and microwave digestion in combination with high pressure ion chromatography (HPIC) separation for the analysis of REEs. The online HPIC-ICP-MS method achieved quantitative recovery for seven REEs, while the offline HPIC method with gamma ray spectroscopy had detection limits significantly lower than quadrupole ICP-MS for fission products.

A task-specific ionic liquid based on hydroxypyridinone for lanthanide separation

Chi-Linh Do-Thanh et al.

Summary: A 1,2-hydroxypyridinone (HOPO) grafted ionic liquid (HOPO-IL) was synthesized and investigated for its extraction performance in various ionic liquids (ILs) and organic solvents. The results showed that the extraction performance of this HOPO-IL extractant was enhanced by approximately 2 folds in IL solvents compared to organic solvents. The study also revealed a strong pH dependence and a dominant cation-exchange mechanism of lanthanide extraction.

Separation and isotope ratio measurements of actinides and lanthanides in spent nuclear fuel samples by CE-MC-ICP-MS

Erwan Dupuis et al.

Summary: Capillary electrophoresis (CE) hyphenated to Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) was used to measure isotope ratios of actinides and lanthanides in a spent nuclear fuel sample. The CE-MC-ICP-MS method showed similar results to the commonly used two-step offline chromatography followed by Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (TIMS), with per-mil range relative standard deviations. The use of CE as the separation method reduced sample quantity and waste volume production compared to chromatography methods.

Highly efficient actinide(III)/lanthanide(III) separation by novel pillar[5] arene-based picolinamide ligands: A study on synthesis, solvent extraction and complexation

Yimin Cai et al.

Summary: The study introduces five novel pillar[5]arene-based extractants that efficiently separate actinides(III) from lanthanides(III). These ligands exhibit high extraction selectivity for Am(III) over Eu(III) at around pH 3.0, with no significant decrease in performance after exposure to gamma radiation.

Exploring lanthanide separations using Eichrom's Ln Resin and low-pressure liquid chromatography

Jessica Ward et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the analytical separations of lanthanide elements using Ln resin and low-pressure chromatography columns, showing that most elements can be baseline separated with careful selection of conditions. However, Nd, Pr, Pm, and Ce co-elute at low acid concentrations. A novel Ce3+/Ce4+ oxidation-reduction approach enables the isolation of Ce, but baseline separation of Nd, Pr, and Pm remains a challenge using the current methods.

Summary: A novel NTAAMIDE process based on a non-heterocyclic N-donor NTAamide(n-Oct) extraction system was developed for the effective separation of trivalent lanthanides and actinides. The process showed rapid extraction of Am3+ and Eu3+, high loading capacity, acid tolerance, and irradiation stability, demonstrating promising application prospects in An(3+)/Ln(3+) separation.

Study on Phenanthroline Carboxamide for Lanthanide Separation: Influence of Amide Substituents

Marie Simonnet et al.

Summary: The study on the effect of structure modification of phenanthroline carboxamides on lanthanide extraction reveals that tridentate monocarboxamides and tetradentate dicarboxamides show different trends in extraction, preferring light lanthanides. The amide substituents impact the distribution ratio, likely due to a modification in the internal polarity of the molecules. This effect could be extrapolated to other nitrogen-based ligands for further refinement of extraction processes.

Summary: Mixtures of dicyclohexylammonium caprylate with dicyclohexylammonium di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate and with trioctylammonium di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate were evaluated as synergistic binary extractants for the recovery and separation of lanthanides. Heavy lanthanides can be effectively separated from the light ones using mixtures of binary extractants based on secondary and tertiary amines.
