Plastic additives and microplastics as emerging contaminants: Mechanisms and analytical assessment

Joao Pinto da Costa et al.

Summary: Plastic additives are a group of substances used in the plastic industry for various purposes. They can assist in molding plastics, improve performance, and reduce costs. However, these additives, along with nonpolymerized monomers, can be more hazardous and pose risks to the environment and human health. This article provides an overview of the mechanistic uptake/release of these compounds, discusses the potential ecological consequences, and explores analytical methodologies for their determination. It also highlights the limitations of current literature and presents future research prospects.

Phthalate toxicity mechanisms: An update

Chendruru Geya Sree et al.

Summary: Phthalates are widely used plasticizers in polymer products, with increasing exposure to people worldwide, causing health concerns. They are commonly used as excipients in controlled-release capsules and enteric coatings, posing risks to patients taking these drugs. Phthalates are primarily responsible for testicular dysfunction, ovarian toxicity, and reduced steroidogenesis in both animals and humans. More research is needed to better understand the health concerns related to phthalates and their metabolites, including investigating their various forms and biomedical effects in different tissues or organs. This review summarizes the chemical interactions, mechanisms, and biomedical applications of phthalates in animals and humans.

From oxidative imbalance to compromised standard sperm parameters: Toxicological aspect of phthalate esters on spermatozoa

Shirsha Mondal et al.

Summary: The exponential rise in global male infertility and subfertility-related issues due to phthalate esters usage raises severe concern. This review focuses on the spermiotoxic effects of phthalate esters, discussing their impact on in vivo and in vitro models as well as surveyed human populations. The imbalance in pro-oxidant:anti-oxidant ratio caused by phthalates and subsequent loss of sperm structural and functional integrity are also critically discussed. Future research directions to address the knowledge gaps in phthalate-mediated male reproductive toxicity are provided.

Neurodevelopmental toxicity of organophosphate flame retardant triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) on zebrafish (Danio rerio) at different life stages

Qiong Zhang et al.

Summary: As a substitute for PBDEs, TPhP is widely used in daily products and living surroundings, but information on its neurodevelopmental toxicity is lacking. This study investigated the effects of TPhP exposure on zebrafish neural development and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Results showed that TPhP exposure reduced survival rate, hatchability, heart rate, body length, and caused malformations in zebrafish. It also led to abnormal locomotor behaviors and impaired panic avoidance reflex. TPhP induced oxidative stress, activated mitochondrial signaling pathways, and affected apoptosis, resulting in visual impairment.

Occurrence and ecological risk assessment of 16 phthalates in surface water of the mainstream of the Yangtze River, China

Jia-Nan Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, water samples were collected from the Yangtze River to investigate the concentrations and ecological risks posed by PAEs. DBP, DEHP, and DIBP were found to be the most abundant PAEs in the river. The results showed a medium risk level of PAEs in the Yangtze River, with DBP and DEHP posing a high ecological risk to aquatic organisms. The optimal solutions for managing DBP and DEHP were determined to be 2.50 μg/L and 0.34 μg/L PNECSSD, respectively.

Occurrence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in river water, ground water and agricultural soils of India

S. Saha et al.

Summary: The presence and distribution of endocrine disrupting chemicals in water and soil in India, as well as their potential human health risks, have been investigated. The study found that these chemicals are widespread and exist in high concentrations, particularly di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate. Continued monitoring of these chemicals is necessary.

Integrated toxicity assessment of DEHP and DBP toward aquatic ecosystem based on multiple trophic model assays

Lilai Yuan et al.

Summary: In order to comprehensively understand the toxic risks of phthalates to aquatic ecosystems, this study examined the acute toxicity of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and di-butyl phthalate (DBP) on multiple trophic models. The results showed that Daphnia magna exhibited the strongest sensitivity to both DEHP and DBP, while algae (Chlorella vulgaris) exhibited the lowest sensitivity. High concentrations of DBP caused hepatic DNA damage in fish, while DEHP had less oxidative damage to fish.

Organophosphate esters in water, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediments of the Minjiang River, China

Hongling Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the levels, distribution, and partitioning behavior of six OPEs in the Minjiang River in Southwest China, revealing that high concentrations of OPEs were detected in suspended particle matter (SPM), warranting more attention to pollution in SPM. The study also found that the proportions of alkyl OPEs increased from surface water to SPM and sediments, with chlorinated OPEs being the most abundant components in surface water.

Summary: The presence of microplastics, especially NPS, can exacerbate the toxic effects of TPhP on the liver and gonads of fish, while having a sex-dependent impact on hormone balance and vitellogenin content. Additionally, the combination of TPhP and PS significantly reduces the reproductive performance of zebrafish, affecting egg production, fertilization rate, and hatchability.
