Multi-process and multi-pollutant control technology for ultra-low emissions in the iron and steel industry

Tingyu Zhu et al.

Summary: The iron and steel industry is a crucial part of the economy but also a major contributor to industrial air pollution. To address this, research and development have focused on ultra-low pollutant emission control technology. Various technologies such as low-NOx combustion and multi-pollutant cooperative control have been developed to achieve efficient pollutant removal and resource utilization. Five demonstration projects have been implemented, providing a comprehensive set of technical solutions for ultra-low emissions of pollutants and supporting the green development of the iron and steel industry.

Biogas production in United States dairy farms incentivized by electricity policy changes

Evan D. D. Erickson et al.

Summary: Manure processing systems that capture methane to produce electricity can help reduce air and water pollution caused by spreading dairy manure on crop fields. A recent US policy allows distributed energy resource systems to participate in wholesale electricity markets, providing incentives to deploy manure processing systems. These systems mitigate environmental impacts by capturing methane and also facilitate nutrient management.

Wenke Huang et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a novel method to visualize and evaluate the effect of license plate restriction policy by combining diesel truck's license plate recognition data with emission inventories. The results show that the impact of the restriction policy on air quality is limited, but the promotion of eco-friendly vehicles can reduce PM2.5 and NOX emissions. These findings provide references for estimating air pollution from diesel vehicles and recognizing high emission zones in other cities or countries.

Summary: Decarbonization is crucial for achieving climate goals, but policies that ignore co-pollutants may lead to higher PM2.5 exposure in Black and high-poverty communities during the energy transition. There is uncertainty about the impact of different decarbonization pathways on air pollution inequality and energy equality goals.

Evaluation of Vietnam air emissions and the impacts of revised power development plan (PDP7 rev) on spatial changes in the thermal power sector

Shimul Roy et al.

Summary: Emission reduction in the thermal power sector is a top priority for the Vietnam government to combat climate change and air pollution. However, the intensive use of coal-fired power plants is expected to lead to an increase in carbon emissions. Although effective pollution controls are expected to decrease NOx emissions, there are still challenges in achieving carbon neutrality in Vietnam.

US decarbonization impacts on air quality and environmental justice

Ciaran L. Gallagher et al.

Summary: By comparing three decarbonization scenarios using the CO-Benefits Risk Assessment Health Impacts Screening Tool (COBRA), this study explores the impact of decarbonization on air pollution and racial disparities. The results show that carbon-free electricity has the greatest effect on reducing PM2.5 concentrations, while carbon-free industrial activity has a significant impact on the Black population, and carbon-free light duty vehicle (LDV) transportation has the largest effect on Asian populations. The study also highlights the variation in air quality improvement across different regions and the importance of considering equity when designing decarbonization policies.

Summary: This paper examines the role of China's Environmental Protection Tax (EPT) Law in the synergy of pollution reduction (PR) and carbon reduction (CR). The study finds that although CO2 is not included in the tax category, the policy has significantly increased the synergistic reduction of sulfur dioxide (SO2)-CO2 and particulate matter (PM)-CO2. Strengthening environmental protection supervision, optimizing energy structure, and improving green technology innovation are identified as the main transmission mechanisms of the EPT Law's impact on the synergy of PR and CR.
