Efficient drug delivery to hypoxic tumors using thermosensitive liposomes with encapsulated anti-cancer drug under high intensity pulsed ultrasound

Pouya Namakshenas et al.

Summary: This study develops an advanced model to simulate the complex processes in conventional and TSL-mediated chemotherapy paired with HIFU-induced hyperthermia. It highlights the importance of the tumor microenvironment and incorporates a new bio-heat transfer model and pulsed ultrasound for thermal necrosis and mild hyperthermia. The results indicate that TSL-mediated drug delivery improves cell death and anti-cancer drug efficacy.

G. Adabbo et al.

Summary: This study uses computational 3D analysis to investigate the effectiveness of liposomal drug delivery as an alternative to conventional chemotherapy. The results show that liposomal drug delivery leads to a 10% improvement in therapeutic outcomes. Considering blood flow in the model yields more realistic drug diffusion and subsequent therapeutic outcomes, while avoiding tissue damage.

Three-Temperature Boundary Element Modeling of Ultrasound Wave Propagation in Anisotropic Viscoelastic Porous Media

Mohamed Abdelsabour Fahmy et al.

Summary: The main goal of this work is to develop a novel boundary element method (BEM) model for analyzing ultrasonic wave propagation in three-temperature anisotropic viscoelastic porous media. A new BEM technique is proposed to solve the problems. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by comparing the results with those obtained from the finite difference method (FDM).

Fractional Dual-Phase-Lag Model for Nonlinear Viscoelastic Soft Tissues

Mohamed Abdelsabour Fahmy et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a new fractional boundary element method (BEM) model for bio-thermomechanical problems in functionally graded anisotropic (FGA) nonlinear viscoelastic soft tissues. The governing equations of bio-thermomechanical problems, including the fractional dual-phase-lag (DPL) bioheat model and Biot's model, are presented. The boundary element method is utilized to handle the complex shapes of nonlinear viscoelastic soft tissues without discretizing the interior domain. The numerical findings confirm the validity, efficiency, and accuracy of the proposed numerical model.

Mathematical modeling of microwave liver ablation with a variable-porosity medium approach

Claudio Tucci et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a more realistic mathematical model based on porous media to simulate microwave thermal ablation of liver tumors. The model takes into account the vascularization of the tumor and shows good agreement with clinical studies. It provides a more accurate prediction of the ablation zone and reduces the risk of tumor recurrence.

A spatiotemporal multi-scale computational model for FDG PET imaging at different stages of tumor growth and angiogenesis

Farshad Moradi Kashkooli et al.

Summary: This study developed a comprehensive computational model to investigate the role of tumor microenvironment (TME) in cancer metabolism. The results showed that as the tumor grows, its microvascular density increases, leading to a more homogeneous distribution of FDG. The study also suggested normalizing the measured values by tumor size and microvascular density before clinical reporting.

A Computational Model for Nonlinear Biomechanics Problems of FGA Biological Soft Tissues

Mohamed Abdelsabour Fahmy

Summary: The principal objective of this work was to develop a semi-implicit hybrid boundary element method (HBEM) for describing nonlinear fractional biomechanical interactions in functionally graded anisotropic (FGA) soft tissues. The method involved the use of the local radial basis function collocation method (LRBFCM) and general boundary element method (GBEM) to solve the nonlinear fractional dual-phase-lag bioheat governing equation, along with the boundary element method (BEM) to solve the poroelastic governing equation. An efficient partitioned semi-implicit coupling algorithm with the generalized modified shift-splitting (GMSS) preconditioners was implemented to solve the resulting equations. The computational findings demonstrated the influences of graded parameter, fractional parameter, and anisotropic property on bio-thermal stress.

Spatiotemporal multi-scale modeling of radiopharmaceutical distributions in vascularized solid tumors

Mohammad Kiani Shahvandi et al.

Summary: We present a comprehensive mathematical model for the distribution of radiopharmaceuticals in vascularized solid tumors. The model takes into account various tumor-related parameters and the dynamic structure of tumor microvascular networks. The results show that the highest uptake of [F-18]FDG occurs in the tumor area due to high capillary permeability. The study has implications for cancer biology, mathematical oncology, medical physics, and radiology.

Pennes' bioheat equation vs. porous media approach in computer modeling of radiofrequency tumor ablation

Claudio Tucci et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare three different heat transfer models for radiofrequency ablation of in vivo liver tissue using a cooled electrode and three different voltage levels. The results showed significant differences in coagulation transverse diameters and temperature distributions at the end of the application, highlighting the importance of considering the models for improving thermal ablation protocols in the future. The new modified porous media-based models were closer to published results and covered the ranges found in in vivo experimental studies, indicating the need to adapt models to different organs and patient profiles.

Measurement of Ex Vivo Liver, Brain and Pancreas Thermal Properties as Function of Temperature

Ahad Mohammadi et al.

Summary: The study focused on investigating the thermal properties of ex vivo liver, pancreas, and brain tissues in relation to temperature. Results showed that the thermal properties of liver and brain tissues exhibited a non-linear relationship with temperature, while the pancreas experienced a phase change around 45 degrees C. The study found that the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of brain and liver tissues increased significantly up to 92 degrees C, while the heat capacity remained relatively constant within the investigated temperature range.
