Blockchain adoption or contingent sourcing? Advancing food supply chain resilience in the post-pandemic era

Xiutian Shi et al.

Summary: In the post-pandemic era, the food supply chains and companies face severe challenges due to the need for product recalls and abandoned products once an infection is detected. To survive, retailers have adopted contingent sourcing and the utilization of blockchain technology to improve product traceability, inspection accuracy, and sourcing transparency. This paper develops a game-theoretic model to study the interrelation between the retailer's decisions on blockchain adoption and sourcing strategies, considering the retailer's options of ordering from risky suppliers or adopting contingent sourcing and implementing blockchain. The study analyzes the optimal retail prices, incentives for sourcing strategy, and conditions for an all-win situation in terms of the retailers, suppliers, supply chain resilience, and consumers.
