Quantifying the impact of COVID-19 on essential health services: a comparison of interrupted time series analysis using Prophet and Poisson regression models

William Ogallo et al.

Summary: This study compared interrupted time series analysis using Prophet and Poisson regression models to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on essential health services in sub-Saharan African countries. The results showed that both models generated similar estimates of the impact of COVID-19 on most outcome-region pairs, but there were differences in some regions. Therefore, rigor and multimethod triangulation are necessary to study the true effect of pandemics on essential health services.

Future burden of cardiovascular disease in Australia: impact on health and economic outcomes between 2020 and 2029

Clara Marquina et al.

Summary: The study estimated the health and economic burden of cardiovascular disease in Australia from 2020 to 2029, finding a significant impact in terms of morbidity, mortality, healthcare costs, and productivity losses. The model projected a high number of fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events, with a substantial number of Australians expected to have prevalent cardiovascular disease by 2029. The total cost of cardiovascular disease, including healthcare costs and productivity losses, was projected to exceed a significant amount in Australian dollars.

Trajectories of prices in generic drug markets: what can we infer from looking at trajectories rather than average prices?

Antonio J. Trujillo et al.

Summary: This paper examines the price trajectories of generic drugs using a group-based trajectory modelling approach. The results show that most generic drugs have slow or rapid price declines, while around 17% of them have rapid price increases. Based on these findings, the paper discusses which drugs would be most likely affected by the law currently being considered by Congress regarding excise tax on drugs with excessive price increases.

The Evolution of Supply and Demand in Markets for Generic Drugs

Richard G. Frank et al.

Summary: Concerns have arisen in recent policy debates about generic drug markets, with changes in regulations, purchasing structure, and drug supply chains affecting market dynamics. While effective price competition remains in larger markets, smaller markets and injectable products face less competition and more supply disruptions. The image of generic drugs as a commodity in competitive markets is simplistic, with increasing evidence of price spikes, sustained high margins, and market instabilities.

Associations between statins and adverse events in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease: systematic review with pairwise, network, and dose-response meta-analyses

Ting Cai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the associations between statins and adverse events in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease, while also examining how these associations varied by type and dosage of statins. The findings suggest that the benefits of statins in preventing cardiovascular disease generally outweigh the risks of adverse events, with little evidence to support tailoring the type or dosage of statins based on safety concerns.
