Numerical assessment of post-earthquake fire response of steel buildings

G. V. Risco et al.

Summary: Accidental events like fires and earthquakes, although low in probability, have high consequences. Current building regulations treat these events as independent, without considering the possible occurrence of both earthquakes and fires. However, fires have been observed to occur as a result of earthquake damage, leading to structural failures and loss of lives. This study assessed the impact of earthquakes on the fire resistance of steel frames and found that the extent of insulation damage during an earthquake significantly reduces the fire resistance of protected frames.

Evidential reasoning and machine learning-based framework for assessment and prediction of human error factors-induced fire incidents

R. Ouache et al.

Summary: This study developed a framework to quantitatively assess and predict human error factors that induce fire incidents in multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs). The framework was applied to seven cities in British Columbia, Canada, and identified 28 human error factors, with incendiary fire and smokers' materials being deemed high-risk. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was found to be highly correlated with predicting these error factors and their origin location, outperforming classifiers.

CFD-based framework for fire risk assessment of contiguous wood-frame villages in the western Hunan region

Fupeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fire risk of wood-frame contiguous villages in western Hunan and proposed a risk assessment framework to evaluate the risk. The fire dynamic simulator and modelling software were used to visualize and analyze fire combustion, and to propose risk mitigation strategies. The results can be used to optimize protection measures in the villages, reducing casualties and property damage.

A two level interval valued neutrosophic AHP integrated TOPSIS methodology for post-earthquake fire risk assessment: An application for Istanbul

Pelin Gulum et al.

Summary: Earthquakes are leading natural disasters with the ability to trigger secondary disasters like post-earthquake fires. This study presents a two-level risk assessment framework for determining fire risks after earthquakes, utilizing methods like IVN-AHP and IVN-TOPSIS to rank districts in Istanbul based on their post-earthquake fire risks. The proposed methodology aims to provide decision makers with reliable assessments for effective risk management.

Analysis of Chinese fire statistics during the period 1997-2017

Yi-xin Luo et al.

Summary: This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of fire statistics in China from 1997 to 2017 to evaluate the fire situation, covering basic indicators such as number of fires, deaths, injuries, and direct losses. The study also examines the characteristics of fires in China, including causes, monthly frequency, time of day for fires, and firefighting actions, as well as regional characteristics of fire accidents. The results show an overall improvement in the fire situation in China, with a decrease in the number of fire accidents and losses. Such analysis provides valuable insights for understanding the impact of building fires in China and aids in forecasting future fire situations for the fire department.

Review of vulnerability indicators for fire risk assessment in cultural heritage

L. Gerardo F. Salazar et al.

Summary: Indicator-based methods provide a simple and reliable way to assess fire risk, but existing methods may not be suitable for cultural heritage assets. Developing a versatile method for analyzing the fire safety of cultural heritage assets is necessary, and requires a review of existing approaches to understand their strengths and weaknesses. This review proposes new vulnerability indicators, classification methods, and discusses their applicability for assessing fire risk in cultural heritage assets.
