Demystifying the Economic Growth and CO2 Nexus in Fujian's Key Industries Based on Decoupling and LMDI Model

Qingquan Jiang et al.

Summary: The development of low-carbon economy in Fujian Province is of great significance to China. However, carbon emissions are mainly concentrated in the manufacturing industry and the electricity, heat, gas, water production and supply industries. Although some industries have achieved decoupling of carbon emissions, it is not stable. In the future, Fujian Province should increase investment in green technology research and development, improve energy efficiency, gradually replace fossil energy with renewable energy, continue to adjust the industrial structure, and strengthen government supervision on corporate carbon emissions.

The role of foreign direct investments, urbanization, productivity, and energy consumption in Finland's carbon emissions: an ARDL approach

Irina Georgescu et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of productivity, energy consumption, foreign direct investments, and urbanization on carbon dioxide emissions in Finland from 2000 to 2020 using an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model. The findings reveal that (i) there is evidence of cointegration among the variables; (ii) energy consumption positively contributes to CO2 emissions in the long run; (iii) labor productivity and urbanization negatively affect CO2 emissions in the long run; (iv) foreign direct investments do not have a significant explanatory power for CO2 emissions.

Research on China Cities' Total Factor Productivity of Carbon Emission: Based on Decoupling Effect

Fang Chen et al.

Summary: Economic development depends on energy consumption, which in turn leads to carbon emissions. Achieving economic decarbonization is a pressing issue in China's journey towards carbon peak and carbon neutrality. Improving the total factor productivity (TFP) of carbon emissions is an important strategy in promoting economic decarbonization. However, the understanding of carbon emission TFP in Chinese cities and how to improve it is still limited.

Carbon emissions and economic growth in the Yellow River Basin: Decoupling and driving factors

Yan Han et al.

Summary: In the context of global pursuit of sustainable development and China's dual carbon goals, this study analyzed the relationship between carbon emissions and economic growth, as well as the driving factors of carbon emissions in the Yellow River Basin of China from 2001 to 2019. The results showed that the decoupling state of CO2 and economic growth in the Yellow River Basin exhibited a trend of expansion negative decoupling - expansion connection - weak decoupling - strong decoupling. The study also identified various factors that influenced carbon emissions, including economic intensity, population size, carbon emission intensity, industrial structure, and energy structure.

Towards carbon neutrality with Chinese characteristics: From an integrated perspective of economic growth-equity-environment

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: With climate warming becoming increasingly severe, reducing carbon emissions has become a global consensus. However, the process of carbon emission reduction entails changes in economic, industrial, and energy structures, thereby affecting economic output, employment, and overall social welfare and equity. Therefore, it is crucial for every nation to determine a scientifically and effectively carbon emission pathway that considers both social development and climate targets. As the largest carbon emitter, China has set carbon peak and carbon neutrality targets. This paper designs corresponding carbon emission reduction scenarios based on China's new emission reduction situation. Additionally, an optimization model integrating economic growth, equity, and environment is developed to determine China's emission pathways from 2020 to 2050 while maximizing social welfare. The results quantitatively demonstrate future total amounts and peak values of carbon emissions under different scenarios, as well as their evolution over time. In most scenarios, the peak concentration will occur between 2025 and 2030, reaching approximately 10.7 to 11.8 billion tons. As carbon emission reduction constraints become more stringent, the cost of reduction will increase, although overall social welfare will slightly increase. Finally, the findings of this study provide practical guidance for achieving carbon emission reduction and offer insights for policymaking.
