Audiologists' perceived value of ototoxicity management and barriers to implementation for at-risk cancer patients in VA: the OtoMIC survey

Dawn Konrad-Martin et al.

Summary: Platinum-based chemotherapies used for cancer treatment can cause hearing loss. Although ototoxicity management (OtoM) is recommended for cancer survivors, it is not widely implemented in oncologic care. A national survey of VA audiologists in the US was conducted to assess their perceptions on OtoM in cancer patients. The results showed that although VA audiologists value OtoM, only about half of them provide it for highly ototoxic treatment regimens.

Ototoxicity monitoring in South African cancer facilities: A national survey

Katerina Ehlert et al.

Summary: Based on the survey conducted in public and private oncology units and audiology referral clinics in South Africa, it was found that ototoxicity monitoring is not routinely implemented. Public units only monitor on referral, while private units rely on patient self-referral when symptoms occur. There is poor awareness of ototoxicity monitoring best practice guidelines among oncology units and audiology referral clinics. The challenges reported include the referral system, environmental noise, and the compromised status of cancer patients.

The impact of chemotherapy-induced inner ear damage on quality of life in cancer survivors: a qualitative study

Stephanie E. Pearson et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the impact of ototoxicity on quality of life for cancer survivors treated with chemotherapy. It found that ototoxicity can have negative effects on social life and create fear of hearing loss or worsening tinnitus. Increased awareness and improved information sources are needed for both patients and clinicians to better address ototoxicity-related issues.

Global burden of ototoxic hearing loss associated with platinum-based cancer treatment: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Lauren K. Dillard et al.

Summary: Platinum-based chemotherapeutic agents cisplatin and carboplatin are widely used in cancer treatment but may cause ototoxic hearing loss. This study aims to estimate the prevalence and global burden of ototoxic hearing loss associated with these drugs. The results show a high prevalence of hearing loss and suggest that nearly half a million cases occur worldwide each year. Urgent measures are needed to reduce the impact of ototoxicity in cancer patients.

AGREE II appraisals of clinical practice guidelines in rehabilitation showed poor reporting and moderate variability in quality ratings when users apply different cuff-offs: a methodological study

Silvia Bargeri et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the reporting characteristics of AGREE II appraisals in rehabilitation and found that applying different cut-offs for quality ratings of CPGs may lead to significant variability in ratings. The application of the most frequent cut-offs resulted in a notable proportion of CPGs shifting their ratings from low to high quality, highlighting the importance of selecting the highest quality CPGs in rehabilitation practice.

Autophagy Regulates the Survival of Hair Cells and Spiral Ganglion Neurons in Cases of Noise, Ototoxic Drug, and Age-Induced Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Lingna Guo et al.

Summary: Inner ear hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons are crucial components of the auditory system, but they are susceptible to genetic defects, noise exposure, ototoxic drugs, and aging. Efforts to combat hearing loss have included cochlear implants, hair cell regeneration, gene therapy, and antioxidant drugs. Understanding the role of autophagy in sensorineural hearing loss and identifying potential autophagy-related targets could lead to new treatments for hearing loss.

Insight into the current practice of ototoxicity monitoring during cisplatin therapy

N. M. Santucci et al.

Summary: The study revealed poor adherence to national ototoxicity monitoring guidelines at an academic medical center, with a missed opportunity for intervention and aural rehabilitation. Patients with Head and Neck Cancer received the most cisplatin treatment, demonstrating higher rates of ototoxicity counseling and pretreatment audiograms. Collaboration between otolaryngology, audiology, and medical oncology is needed to develop and promote an effective ototoxicity-monitoring program.
