Quantifying vegetation and its effect on aeolian sediment transport: A UAS investigation on longitudinal dunes

Samuel Shumack et al.

Summary: This study used Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) to explore the relationship between vegetation and aeolian sediment transport in the Simpson Desert. The results showed statistical associations between the spatial distribution and structure of vegetation and the location and quantity of aeolian ripples. Vegetation cover and gap length were found to be important factors in predicting aeolian ripple abundance.

Measuring plant biomass remotely using drones in arid landscapes

Justin A. McCann et al.

Summary: Measurement of plant biomass variation is crucial in addressing ecological and evolutionary questions. This study utilized a low-cost drone system to estimate the biomass of individual shrub-sized plants, allowing for rapid data collection and non-destructive sampling. The results showed that the drone method was more accurate than simple dimension measurements for certain plant species, providing potential for large-scale data collection and answering complex ecological and evolutionary questions.

Remote sensing of trophic cascades: multi-temporal landsat imagery reveals vegetation change driven by the removal of an apex predator

Adrian G. Fisher et al.

Summary: A study in the Strzelecki Desert in Australia found that the absence of predators has altered vegetation dynamics, with reduced vegetation cover where dingo populations were decreased. The trophic cascade effect was observed at both landscape and site scales, indicating significant impacts of apex predator removal on arid ecosystems.

Refining medium resolution fractional cover for arid Australia to detect vegetation dynamics and wind erosion susceptibility on longitudinal dunes

Samuel Shumack et al.

Summary: Medium resolution satellite-derived fractional cover estimates provide a powerful means to study arid ecosystem dynamics. This study in Australia's vegetated dunefields observed vegetation growth response to rainfall 'pulses', multiple time scales of antecedent climatic influence, dune susceptibility to wind-blown sand drift, and implications of image resolution choice. The new AZN model yielded favorable results and highlighted the importance of Landsat resolutions or better for estimating cover in dune crest regions.

Improving Landsat predictions of rangeland fractional cover with multitask learning and uncertainty

Brady W. Allred et al.

Summary: Operational satellite remote sensing products are revolutionizing rangeland management and science by combining local data and knowledge to inform decision-making at multiple scales. The new rangeland fractional cover product, developed using temporal convolutional networks, shows improved predictive performance for cover and uncertainty, expanding the management toolbox for users.

Strategic adaptive management planning-Restoring a desert ecosystem by managing introduced species and native herbivores and reintroducing mammals

Richard T. Kingsford et al.

Summary: The study describes a Strategic Adaptive Management Plan for restoring arid rangelands by eradicating or controlling introduced animals, managing native herbivores, and reintroducing regionally extinct mammals. The plan includes clear objectives, management actions, and outcomes to track and report transparently on progress. Different management treatments are implemented to restore threatened animal populations and ecosystem balance.
