Bright Free-Radical Emission in Ionic Liquids

Wei Zheng et al.

Summary: This study presents a rational design strategy to protect photoinduced carbonyl free radical emission through electrostatic interaction and spin delocalization effects. A host-guest system consisting of tricarbonyl-substituted benzene molecules and imidazolium ionic liquids was constructed, enabling in situ generation and stabilization of carbonyl anion radical emission. The luminescence efficiency was significantly influenced by the anion species and alkyl chain length, with the highest radical emission efficiency being four times higher than a polymer-protected radical system. Theoretical calculations confirmed the synergistic effect of electrostatic interactions and spin delocalization in stabilizing the radical emission.

Photo-controllable Luminescence from Radicals Leading to Ratiometric Emission Switching via Dynamic Intermolecular Coupling

Jia-Ming Jin et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel photo-controllable luminescent radical system (TBIQ) was reported, which showed a wide range of ratiometric color changes via light excitation. The conjugated skeleton of TBIQ was decorated with steric-demanding tertiary butyl groups, enabling dynamic intermolecular coupling for controllable behaviors. The study revealed that the planarization process of TBIQ's helicenic pseudo-planar conformation after light excitation led to the generation of radicals via intermolecular charge transfer. This photo-controllable luminescent radical system was employed for high-level information encryption, offering unique insights into molecular dynamic motion for optical manufacturing and broadening the scope of smart-responsive materials for advanced applications.

Photo-triggered full-color circularly polarized luminescence based on photonic capsules for multilevel information encryption

Siyang Lin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of device-friendly solid films with color tunability by utilizing Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) platforms consisting of chiral donors and achiral molecular switches in liquid crystal photonic capsules (LCPCs). These LCPCs exhibit photoswitchable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from blue emission to RGB trichromatic signals under UV irradiation, showing strong time dependence due to different FRET efficiencies at each time node. Based on these properties, the concept of multilevel data encryption using LCPC films is demonstrated.

Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Gels: Fabrications, Functions, and Applications

Zhao Li et al.

Summary: Chromophores with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) display intense fluorescence in their aggregated states but minimal emission in solution as discrete molecules due to changes in intramolecular motions. Gels, as solvent-swollen quasi-solids, manipulate intramolecular motions and have attracted significant interest for their unique properties and promising applications. The comprehensive overview covers fabrication strategies, applications, functions, structure-property relationships of AIE-active gels, diverse areas of applications, ongoing challenges, potential means to address them, and future perspectives to inspire research on novel materials and ideas.

Photoinduced Radical Emission in a Coassembly System

Yiran Li et al.

Summary: Developing radical emission at ambient conditions poses a challenge due to the instability of radical species in air. The study demonstrated that coassembling tricarbonyl-substituted benzene molecules with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) can protect free radicals and lead to strong solid state free radical emission. Quantum-chemical calculations predicted the origin of such fluorescence and the photoinduced radical emission was successfully utilized for information encryption application.
