Simultaneous extraction and analysis of apple pomace by gradient pressurized liquid extraction coupled in-line with solid-phase extraction and on-line with HPLC

Laise C. Da Silva et al.

Summary: To overcome the challenges of sample preparation for chromatographic analysis of apple pomace, a solvent gradient using Pressurized Liquid Extraction (PLE) was proposed, where the solvent changes gradually from water to ethanol. Different dynamic gradients, static time, and temperatures were evaluated and found to affect the yields of target analytes. The use of extraction solvent gradient improved extraction yields of compounds with different characteristics. Coupling solid-phase extraction in-line allowed separation of compounds into fractions, with furfural, HMF, and chlorogenic acid eluting gradually, while flavonoids were retained and eluted in later fractions. On-line analysis by HPLC provided real-time information and a 3D chromatogram of the sample.

Pressurized liquid extraction coupled in-line with SPE and on-line with HPLC (PLE-SPExHPLC) for the recovery and purification of anthocyanins from SC-CO2 semi-defatted Acai (Euterpe oleracea)

Francisco W. Maciel-Silva et al.

Summary: This study aimed to extract anthocyanins from dried and semi-defatted acai pulp using green technologies. The coupling of pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) with in-line purification through solid-phase extraction (SPE) and on-line analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) improved the extraction efficiency and produced a more concentrated extract compared to PLE alone.

Understanding the Gastrointestinal Behavior of the Coffee Pulp Phenolic Compounds under Simulated Conditions

Silvia Canas et al.

Summary: Coffee pulp is a by-product that contains antioxidant phytochemicals including phenolic compounds and caffeine. However, the antioxidant properties of phenolic compounds are limited by their bioaccessibility, bioavailability, and biotransformation during gastrointestinal digestion. This study found that the coffee pulp extract had higher concentrations of phenolic compounds, mainly phenolic acids, and caffeine. The antioxidant capacity increased during digestion, but flavonoids were mostly degraded. Phenolic acids and caffeine were highly bioaccessible, while flavonoids were degraded. These results suggest that coffee pulp can be a potential antioxidant food ingredient.

Obtaining Bioactive Compounds from the Coffee Husk (Coffea arabica L.) Using Different Extraction Methods

Mariana de Oliveira Silva et al.

Summary: Different methods for obtaining raw material and extracting bioactive compounds from coffee husks were evaluated. The water and ethanol mixture (1:1) showed better extraction capacity, with both traditional (water bath) and unconventional (ultrasound) methods yielding satisfactory results. Ultimately, the best method for dehydrated husk was water bath with a water and ethanol mixture (1:1) as the extracting solution.
