Toward Human-in-the-Loop AI: Enhancing Deep Reinforcement Learning via Real-Time Human Guidance for Autonomous Driving

Jingda Wu et al.

Summary: Machine learning, with its limited intelligence, cannot replace humans in real-world applications due to its inability to handle various situations. It is important to introduce humans into the training loop of artificial intelligence (AI) to leverage their robustness and adaptability. In this study, a real-time human-guidance-based deep reinforcement learning (DRL) method is developed for autonomous driving policy training. With a novel control transfer mechanism, humans can intervene and correct the agent's actions in real time during training. The proposed method improves DRL efficiency and performance by fusing real-time human guidance actions into the training loop.

Adding visual contextual information to continuous sonification feedback about low-reliability situations in conditionally automated driving: A driving simulator study

Kuan-Ting Chen et al.

Summary: In conditionally automated driving, control transitions pose a challenge due to out-of-the-loop drivers. This research examines the impact of auxiliary information on takeover events. Results showed that auxiliary information affected visual information processing but not takeover decisions or response times. These findings have implications for designing effective feedback in various levels of automation.

Take-Over Requests after Waking in Autonomous Vehicles

Won Kim et al.

Summary: Autonomous vehicles allow drivers to focus on non-driving tasks, but waking drivers up from sleep during take-over requests (TORs) can be critical. Experimental results showed that drivers were more attentive to driving when awakened more than 10 seconds prior to the event, while visual prompts were needed when awakened less than 5 seconds prior.

Measurement and prediction of work engagement under different indoor lighting conditions using physiological sensing

Min Deng et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to investigate the effect of lighting level on occupants' work engagement by studying the frontal asymmetry index (FAI) measured by electroencephalography (EEG). The results show that the effect of lighting level on work engagement varies across individuals, which highlights the necessity of developing personalized models. The study also proposes a method to predict engagement level for different individuals based on physiological parameters using Random Forest (RF) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN), showing that RF outperforms ANN in most prediction cases.

The influence of experienced severe road traffic accidents on take-over reactions and non-driving-related tasks in an automated driving simulator study

Klemens Weigl et al.

Summary: Automated vehicles (AVs) are developed to increase safety and reduce road traffic accidents (RTAs), however, a study found that past experiences of severe RTAs do not affect non-driving related tasks (NDRT), take-over request (TOR), or driving performance. Results from a driving simulator study showed better performances with the heads-up display (HUD) condition and lower cognitive workload with the auditory-speech (ASD) condition, regardless of RTA experience. Additionally, although PTSD symptoms were higher in the accident group, there were no group differences in depression and psychological resilience.

Classification of Drivers' Workload Using Physiological Signals in Conditional Automation

Quentin Meteier et al.

Summary: The increasing use of automation in cars will shift the responsibility of main driving tasks away from drivers. However, an increase in drivers' mental workload due to performing secondary tasks may impact their takeover performance in hazardous situations. Understanding the driver's mental state is crucial for enhancing safety in conditionally automated vehicles.

Vadim Melnicuk et al.

Summary: This research investigates the impact of cognitive load on drivers' physiological state and driving performance during an automated driving to manual control transition scenario, finding that high levels of cognitive load impair driving performance, particularly lateral control of the vehicle; a novel method is introduced to determine stabilisation times of indicators following control transition, showing that driving performance takes longer to normalise after high cognitive load in automated driving.
