Transmission and infection risk of COVID-19 when people coughing in an elevator

Sumei Liu et al.

Summary: This study used a CFD model to investigate virus transmission in elevators. Factors such as the infected person's location, standing positions, and air flow rate were analyzed. The study found that the infected person's position and standing direction significantly influenced virus transmission. Mechanical ventilation with a flow rate of 30 ACH effectively reduced the risk of infection. Wearing surgical masks also decreased the highest number of inhaled virus copies.

The associations of particulate matter short-term exposure and serum lipids are modified by vitamin D status: A panel study of young healthy adults

Jia-Min Li et al.

Summary: This study examined the potential modifying effect of vitamin D levels on the associations between particulate matter (PM) exposure and serum lipids among young healthy individuals. The results showed that vitamin D levels influenced the impact of PM exposure on blood lipids, with significant associations observed in individuals with lower vitamin D levels.

Particulate Matter (PM2.5 and PM10) Concentration of Subway Transfer Stations in Beijing, China

Xinru Wang et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on studying the characteristics of PM2.5 and PM10 at transfer stations, which is an area lacking research. The study finds that the concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 on the platform in transfer stations are slightly lower than non-transfer stations, but the ratio of PM2.5 to PM10 is higher, indicating a difference in PM10 content. Additionally, the concentration of PM2.5 at subway stations has a strong correlation with the outside environment.

Commuters health risk associated with particulate matter exposures in subway system-Globally

Debananda Roy et al.

Summary: The effects of air pollution within subway systems on public health have been overlooked. This study found significant non-cancer and cancer risks in subway systems worldwide, with Asian subway systems being recognized as high cancer risk zones. Strengthening regulation and applying air purification techniques are suggested to manage the risks in subway systems.

Investigation of airborne particle exposure in an office with mixing and displacement ventilation

Sumei Liu et al.

Summary: Effective ventilation is crucial in reducing the spread of COVID-19 in buildings. This study compared the performance of a mixing ventilation (MV) system and a displacement ventilation (DV) system in terms of air temperature and particle concentration. Increasing the ventilation rate reduced the particle concentration, but the improvement was not proportional to the ventilation rate. The DV system had a higher ventilation effectiveness than the MV system, making it a better choice for indoor air quality.

Atmospheric iron particles in PM2.5 from a subway station, Beijing, China

Mengyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Particulate matter pollution in subway stations can significantly impact the air quality and the health of subway workers and commuters. This study found that PM2.5 concentration in subway stations is affected by both indoor and outdoor sources, particularly those related to train activities. Iron was the dominant element in the PM2.5 particles in subway stations, and these iron-rich particles were mainly found in railway carriages, station concourse, and platforms.

Summary: The study found that PM2.5 and total PAHs concentrations were significantly correlated with increased levels of urinary 8OHdG, 8-iso-PGF2α, and MDA. Essential metals showed exposure-response increase in 8-OHdG levels. Certain metals were significantly correlated with urinary 8-iso-PGF2α and MDA. Each one-unit increase in urinary total OH-PAHs resulted in increases in 8-OHdG, 8-iso-PGF2α, and MDA. Additionally, all 12 urinary metals showed significant and positive correlations with oxidative stress biomarkers in all subjects.
