National-scale monitoring of historic used organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and current used pesticides (CUPs) in Chinese surface soil: Old topic and new story

Liang Wang et al.

Summary: By investigating the pollution characteristics of pesticides in surface soil across China, this study found significant differences in the levels and spatial distributions of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and current used pesticides (CUPs) in different regions. The study provides important information for a deeper understanding of the environmental fate of pesticides in both China and the world.

Short-term response of soil enzyme activities and bacterial communities in black soil to a herbicide mixture: Atrazine and Acetochlor

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combined application of atrazine and acetochlor and its effects on soil enzyme activities and bacterial communities. The results showed that the combination of atrazine and acetochlor had synergistic inhibitory effects on soil enzyme activities and had a stronger toxic effect on bacteria than individual herbicides. The microbial community structure was also affected differently by the herbicides. PICRUSt analysis indicated that the functions related to replication and repair, energy metabolism, cell motility, and cellular processes and signaling were inhibited by the herbicides, especially in the combination treatment.

Suicide by Pesticide (Phorate) Ingestion: Case Report and Review of Literature

Angela Simonelli et al.

Summary: Pesticide self-poisoning is responsible for approximately one in seven global suicides, mostly in rural areas of developing countries. Organophosphorus compounds, such as phorate, exert their toxicological effects through inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. This case study describes the intentional suicide of a 24-year-old Bengali male who ingested phorate, presenting the complete toxicological findings.

Approach to Predicting the Size-Dependent Inhalation Intake of Particulate Novel Brominated Flame Retardants

Peng-Tuan Hu et al.

Summary: A new approach has been developed to predict the size-dependent inhalation intake of particulate NBFRs based on their G/P partitioning behavior, and it was found in a simulation case that the intake of particulate NBFRs exceeded that of gaseous NBFRs.

Distribution of eight organophosphorus pesticides and their oxides in surface water of the East China Sea based on high volume solid phase extraction method

Kaiyan Xiao et al.

Summary: The study reported the presence of eight organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in the East China Sea, with terbufos sulfone and fenthion identified as the main pollutants, likely originating from pesticide use in China and other countries. Off-shore input from coastal regions was identified as a major source of OPP pollution in the East China Sea, with ocean currents playing a crucial role in their transport. Ecological risk assessment indicated a high risk to species in the East China Sea from these OPPs, but minimal risk to human health.

Assessment of pesticides volatilization potential based on their molecular properties using the TyPol tool

Laure Mamy et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the emission potential of pesticides into the atmosphere through volatilization, using the TyPol tool to explore the relationships between the volatilization potentials of 178 pesticides and their molecular properties. The results showed that pesticides with high volatilization potential have high total energy and low molecular weight, molecular connectivity indices and polarizability. The TyPol tool can help better understand the volatilization potential of pesticides and assess the risk of air contamination by pesticides.

Occurrence of atmospheric current-use and historic-use pesticides at a CAWNET background site in central China

Lingxi Zhan et al.

Summary: China's heavy pesticide usage, particularly in agriculture, has led to concerns about the presence of current-use and historic-use pesticides in the background air. Pyrethroids are the most commonly found current-use pesticides, with chlorothalonil and trifluralin showing high levels in spring and summer. Atmospheric concentrations of certain historic-use pesticides have declined significantly due to emission controls, but there is a noticeable increase in a-endosulfan concentration, indicating fresh input from certain provinces. Special attention and control measures are recommended for endosulfan in China.
