The asymmetric effect of agriculturalization toward climate neutrality targets

Farzan Yahya et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of agricultural production on carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane emissions using panel data from 90 countries. The findings indicate that agricultural practices can reduce CO2 emissions, particularly among lower carbon emitters. However, they also increase N2O and methane emissions across all levels. Agricultural trade, specifically exports, contributes to a decrease in CO2 emissions but an increase in N2O and methane emissions. Agricultural imports are associated with higher levels of greenhouse gas emissions. The study suggests a shift towards sustainable agriculture and green trade policies to achieve climate neutrality.

Analysing the co-benefit of environmental tax amidst clean energy development in Europe?s largest agrarian economies

Andrew Adewale Alola et al.

Summary: This study confirms the co-benefit of environmental tax in terms of environmental sustainability and value-added to agriculture in Europe's largest agrarian economies. It also suggests that renewable energy utilization and population density are desirable factors for achieving a carbon-neutral target. The findings provide timely policy insight that accommodates both the environmental sustainability and food security framework of the European Union.

Asymmetric effects of heterogeneous environmental standards on green technology innovation: Evidence from China

Le Xu et al.

Summary: Exploring the asymmetric effects of different environmental standards on green technology innovation is important for sustainable development. This study analyzes provincial-industrial level green patent data and uses difference-in-differences (DID) and propensity score matching DID (PSM-DID) models to investigate the effects of heterogeneous environmental standards. The results show that cleaner production standards promote green technology innovation while pollution emission standards inhibit it, with variations observed between regions and industries. The influence mechanisms identified include market competition, foreign direct investment (FDI), and research and development (R&D) inputs.

Does low carbon energy transition impede air pollution? Evidence from China's coal-to-gas policy

Xueyang Wang et al.

Summary: This study uses the synthetic control method to examine the effects of the coal-to-gas policy on air pollution in pilot areas in China. The findings show that the policy significantly reduced air pollution in most pilot areas, but exacerbated pollution in Henan Province. The implementation of the policy is found to reduce air pollution by promoting economic development and energy structure transformation, as well as increasing foreign and technological investment.

Rethinking the complex effects of the clean energy transition on air pollution abatement: Evidence from China's coal-to-gas policy

Desheng Wu et al.

Summary: China's coal-to-gas policy can reduce individual air pollution but may increase ozone pollution. The benefits are more pronounced in the spring and winter, resource-based cities, megacities, and cities with young leaders and strong governance. However, the policy faces the risk of long-term failure, and structural optimization and technological innovation are needed to mitigate air pollution.

Synergy of pollution control and carbon reduction in China: Spatial-temporal characteristics, regional differences, and convergence

Changfei Nie et al.

Summary: Promoting the synergy between pollution control (PC) and carbon reduction (CR) is an important strategy for ecological civilization construction in China. The study finds that there are spatial and temporal differences in the coupling coordination degree (CCD) between PC and CR in different provinces of China, with higher levels in the east and south regions. Additionally, there is an increasing trend in the overall differences in the CCD initially, followed by a decreasing trend. The results provide empirical evidence and policy implications for facilitating the synergistic effect of PC and CR.

The impact of renewable energy policies on deaths from outdoor and indoor air pollution: Empirical evidence from Latin American and Caribbean countries

Matheus Koengkan et al.

Summary: This investigation examines the impact of renewable energy policies on deaths caused by air pollution in 15 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. The results show that economic incentives, economic growth, and social globalization can reduce air pollution deaths, while non-renewable energy consumption, urbanization, and economic globalization may increase these deaths.

Effect of the carbon emissions trading policy on the co-benefits of carbon emissions reduction and air pollution control

Zhaoyingzi Dong et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of China's carbon emissions trading policy on carbon emissions and air quality, using the difference-in-differences method. The results show that the policy significantly affects the co-benefits of carbon emissions reduction and air quality improvement, and has indirect effects through changing innovation ability and location choice of industries. It also reveals the policy's effectiveness in Central China and supports the pollution haven hypothesis by increasing carbon emissions in neighboring cities.

Zhenbing Yang et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of carbon regulation on the operating performance of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) using the Low-carbon Pilot Program introduced in 2010 as an exogenous natural experiment. The results show that the carbon regulation policy significantly reduces the operating performance of SOEs, especially with higher carbon intensity reduction targets set by the central government. The study suggests that the central government should promote R&D activities related to low-carbon technology and improve the technical efficiency of SOEs when introducing any low-carbon policy.
