Analytical approach for evaluation of impact damage in nonlinear quasi-isotropic plates of arbitrary boundary conditions

Hiroshi Suemasu et al.

Summary: This study conducted an analytical research to investigate the effects of various conditions on low-velocity impact damage in quasi-isotropic nonlinear composite laminates and provided a quick tool for evaluating the significance of such damage. The damaged laminates were modeled as quasi-isotropic nonlinear axisymmetric plates with multiple delaminations. Using closed-form expressions derived from the Rayleigh-Ritz method, the study quantitatively revealed the effects of different design factors on the response of the damaged plates and compared the results with finite element solutions.

Fracture toughness-based models for web-crippling of pultruded GFRP profiles

Summary: This study presents a numerical investigation on the web-crippling failure of pultruded glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) profiles, validated through experimental tests. The results show that material damage and instability have significant effects on failure, with transverse compressive stresses influencing web-crippling the most.

On the investigation of quasi-static crack resistance of thermoplastic tape layered composites with multiple delaminations: Approaches for quantification

Anastasiia Khudiakova et al.

Summary: The study focused on quantitatively characterizing the interlayer bonding in unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic laminates produced by ATPisc. The laminates exhibited multiple cracking with fiber bridging during testing, affecting the main mid-plane crack propagation. Comparisons were made between visually measured crack length, back-calculated crack length, and crack length calculated using flexural modulus and compliance, to study this effect, along with investigating the evolution of effective flexural modulus and damage parameter throughout testing.

Experimental investigation on the moment-rotation performance of pultruded FRP web-flange junctions

Gisele G. Cintra et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the rotational stiffness behavior of WFJs in FRP, monitoring relative rotations between the web and flange using DIC technique. Lower bound functions were proposed to simulate junction stiffness retention, and two equations were developed to predict rotational stiffness per unit of width for pultruded joints. The theoretical and experimental results agreed fairly well, with maximum differences of 24% for I-sections and 38% for channels.
