Summary: One of the main obstacles in adopting digital pathology is efficiently processing hyperdimensional digitized biopsy samples, known as whole slide images (WSIs). Deep learning and compact WSI representations are urgently needed to accelerate image analysis and improve the interpretability of pathology results. This article introduces a new evolutionary approach for WSI representation based on large-scale multiobjective optimization (LSMOP). The proposed schemes are validated using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) images, demonstrating improved WSI representation, classification accuracy, and feature quality. The evolutionary algorithm finds a highly compact feature vector for WSI representation with higher accuracy compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Summary: This study investigates a multi-objective batching decision problem in batch annealing operations in the iron and steel industry. A data-driven method is developed to determine technological parameters for a multi-objective optimization model, and a learning-based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (LBMOEA) with novel operators is proposed. Computational experiments show that LBMOEA with clustering method is effective and efficient, demonstrating potential for practical production applications.

Summary: This paper presents a model-based evolutionary algorithm for the Home Health Care Routing and Scheduling Problem (HHCRSP). The algorithm generates routes with care activities and shift schedules, considering qualification levels. Performance is optimized in terms of travel time, time window waiting time, and shift overtime. Numerical experiments using real-life data show close-to-optimal performance for small instances and a 41% efficiency gain compared to a case study. Furthermore, the model-based evolutionary algorithm outperforms a traditional evolutionary algorithm, emphasizing the importance of learning and exploiting a model in HHCRSP optimization.

Summary: This study proposes a Biobjective Hybrid Genetic Algorithm - hypervolume contribution measure (BOHGA-HCM) to address the bi-objective flexible job shop problem. The algorithm creates initial population by randomly assigning operations to available machines and enhances diversity to avoid premature convergence using hypervolume contribution measure.

Summary: This paper proposes a machine learning-based framework, called MORM, to address the challenge of insufficient coverage of the Pareto front in many-objective optimization problems. The framework reversely maps the objective values to decision variables using a learning model constructed on the initial PF set. It generates candidate solutions using inexpensive generative techniques and covers the initial PF efficiently through iteratively generated non-dominated candidate solutions.

Summary: Metaheuristic algorithms are well-established approaches for solving complex real-world optimization problems, and the concept of center-based sampling has been introduced as a way to improve the optimization process. This study comprehensively investigates the impact of center-based sampling on solving optimization problems at different levels of detail. The experimental results confirm the crucial role of center-based sampling in improving the convergence rate of optimization algorithms for high-dimensional problems.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel approach to compactly represent histopathology images and search and classify biopsy specimens. By using evolutionary algorithms to optimize the output of pre-trained deep networks, a very small set of features is generated to accurately represent each tissue/biopsy. The experimental results demonstrate that this method can reliably select salient features of the biopsy samples and has the potential to greatly facilitate the adoption of digital pathology.

Summary: Pre-trained deep artificial neural networks are a dominant source for image representation and their performance in image analysis can be improved through fine-tuning. This study introduces a new network, KimiaNet, which outperforms the original DenseNet and other networks in representing histopathology images. By utilizing a large dataset and training with different configurations, KimiaNet shows superior results in image analysis.
