Operationalizing Legitimacy

Summary: Legitimacy is commonly used to explain various social phenomena, but measuring it remains challenging. This article synthesizes different approaches to conceptualizing legitimacy and proposes a generalizable method to measure it. By identifying three necessary conditions for legitimacy, the article offers insights on empirically establishing legitimacy and distinguishing it from similar phenomena. The operationalization of legitimacy has novel implications for understanding its effects and contributes to debates on its relevance in explaining significant social outcomes.

Resource Development and Use in a Nonprofit Collaboration

Summary: This study examines the development and utilization of resources in collaboration in the public and nonprofit sectors. Based on a longitudinal qualitative case analysis of a collaboration among seven nonprofit organizations over five years, the study identifies four actions-framing, orienting, mobilizing, and structuring-through which collaboration participants develop and use resources. The findings highlight the significance of these actions in creating and enhancing the value of resources in collaboration.

Cross-sector collaboration formality: the effects of institutions and organizational leaders

Summary: This research explores the impact of institutional characteristics and personal characteristics of leaders on the formality of collaboration in a non-Western context. The findings based on data from local governments and non-profits in Lebanon suggest that organizations facing resource insufficiency and large staff size, as well as leaders with cross-sector experience, are inclined to use formal arrangements for cross-sector collaboration. However, organizations with female leaders tend to opt for informal arrangements. The formality of collaboration arrangements used by local governments and non-profits is influenced by various characteristics of institutions and their leaders, but the effects differ across sectors.
