Extremes of both weight gain and weight loss are associated with increased incidence of heart failure and cardiovascular death: evidence from the CANVAS Program and CREDENCE

Giulia Ferrannini et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the associations between extreme weight changes and cardiovascular outcomes. The results showed that extreme weight gain or loss was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and heart failure hospitalization. For patients with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk, large changes in body weight should be carefully assessed in view of individualized management.

Independent Association Between Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors and Muscle Wasting in Patients with Heart Failure: A Single-Center, Ambispective, Observational Study

Katsuhiko Ohori et al.

Summary: This study found that long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is associated with an increased risk of muscle wasting in heart failure (HF) patients. Therefore, caution should be exercised when performing long-term PPI treatment in HF patients at high risk of muscle wasting or with multiple risk factors.

Weight change and clinical outcomes in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction: insights from EMPEROR-Reduced

Stefan D. Anker et al.

Summary: In this study, the relationship between baseline BMI, weight loss, and the effects of empagliflozin on heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) were analyzed. The study found that the benefits of empagliflozin were consistent across all BMI categories, and weight loss was associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality regardless of treatment group.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the stagnation of social activity may lead to a decrease in motivation to maintain a healthy diet. This one-year follow-up study found an association between frailty in older adults and dietary variety. The results showed that individuals with low dietary variety had an increased frailty score during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prognostic impact of cachexia by multi-assessment in older adults with heart failure: FRAGILE-HF cohort study

Emi Maekawa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association of Evans's criteria, consisting of multiple assessments, with the prognosis of HF in older adults. The findings showed that cachexia evaluated by multi-assessment was associated with a worse prognosis in older adults with HF. A multimodal assessment of cachexia may be helpful for risk stratification in older patients with HF.

Impact of weight loss in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: results from the FLAGSHIP study

Summary: In patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) and diabetes mellitus (DM), differences were observed in muscle mass, cardiovascular disease, hypertension prevalence, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), plasma renin activity (PRA), and other factors. Nutritional assessment, blood glucose levels, and renin-angiotensin system activation may be associated with muscle wasting in CHF patients with DM.

Summary: This study found that low daily energy intake was independently associated with higher mortality in elderly HF patients, and inclusion of energy intake in addition to established predictors improved mortality risk stratification. Patients who consumed 31.5 kcal/kg/day of energy had the lowest risk of all-cause mortality.

Impact of weight loss in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: results from the FLAGSHIP study

Summary: This study identified weight loss as a poor prognostic factor for patients with heart failure, particularly in those with preserved ejection fraction who are not obese. Weight loss was significantly associated with all-cause mortality and HF rehospitalization in non-obese patients but not in obese patients. This suggests that weight loss should be monitored as an indicator of worsening heart failure in non-obese patients.
