The US farm credit system and agricultural development: Evidence from an early expansion, 1920-1940

Jared Hutchins

Summary: This study explores the impact of Production Credit Associations (PCAs), a branch of the early Farm Credit System, on agricultural yield and input use after the farm credit crisis of the 1920s in the United States. The findings show that counties within 30 km of a PCA experienced 7% to 14% higher crop revenue per acre and 9% higher corn yields compared to counties located more than 60 km away from a PCA. Additionally, there was a small but statistically significant increase in tractor usage (1% to 2%) in these areas. These results provide crucial evidence of the effectiveness of government-sponsored enterprises in addressing market frictions in the early US agricultural economy.

Ageing threatens sustainability of smallholder farming in China

Chenchen Ren et al.

Summary: The rapid demographic ageing in rural areas has negatively affected agriculture, resulting in a decrease in farmland size, agricultural productivity, and farmers' income. However, promoting new farming models can reverse these negative consequences by increasing farmland size, agricultural productivity, and farmers' income, while reducing fertilizer loss.

Study on the Relationship between Agricultural Credit, Fiscal Support, and Farmers' Income-Empirical Analysis Based on the PVAR Model

Yinan Wang et al.

Summary: The growth of farmers' income is crucial in China's Three Rural Issues, and improving fiscal policy support and credit supply are important for this. Using panel data from 30 Chinese provinces during 2003-2020, this study explores the relationship between agricultural credit, fiscal support for agriculture, and farmers' income from a dynamic perspective, considering regional heterogeneity. The empirical results show that fiscal support for agriculture has a stronger positive correlation with farmers' income growth compared to agricultural credit. The policy implications include implementing regionally differentiated agricultural credit development strategies, enhancing fiscal support for agriculture, and optimizing the structure of fiscal support.

Reconsidering agricultural credits and agricultural production nexus from a global perspective

Dicle Ozdemir

Summary: This study investigates the impact of agricultural credits on agricultural production, considering factors like foreign direct investments, inflation rate, and government expenditures. The findings reveal a positive long-term relationship, indicating that a 1% increase in agricultural credits leads to a 0.19% increase in value-added agriculture, highlighting the significant role of credit in boosting agricultural productivity. However, foreign direct investment and government size were found to have adverse effects on agricultural value-added, with bidirectional causal links among several variables, demonstrating complex interactions within the agricultural sector.

Climate change and sustainable agricultural growth in the sahel region: Mitigating or resilient policy response?

Ting Wang et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the relationship between climate change and sustainable agricultural growth in nine Sahel countries from 1990 to 2020. The results show that climate change caused by rainfall variation is a significant factor in reducing sustainable agricultural growth in the region. There is a one-way feedback relationship from sustainable agricultural growth to greenhouse gas emissions. The study recommends policymakers in the Sahel region and Africa as a whole to implement a policy mix that focuses on mitigating the adverse effects of rainfall variation on agricultural sustainability, particularly through irrigation, and to proactively build the resilience and adaptation of the region to future agriculturally induced climatic changes.

A framework for assessing sustainable agriculture and rural development: A case study of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, China

Siwei Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the three dimensions of sustainable agriculture and rural development (agricultural production, rural environment, and farmers' well-being) and their coupling coordination in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The research findings indicate that urbanization has different impacts on sustainable agriculture and rural development, and improper urban development negatively affects rural areas. Effective policies are recommended to increase farmers' well-being in remote mountainous and traditional agricultural areas and mitigate the damage of inappropriate urbanization on coordination development.

Effects of sustainable agricultural practices on farm income and food security in northern Ghana

Edinam Dope Setsoafia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the factors affecting smallholder farmers' decisions to adopt sustainable agricultural practices (SAPs) and the impacts of the adoption on farm income and food security. Results show that decisions are influenced by household demographics, plot-level characteristics, extension services and locations. Adopting multiple SAPs has larger positive impacts on farm income and food security than adopting single or two SAPs. Therefore, policies should focus on improving extension services and strengthening farmer-based organizations to promote the adoption of multiple SAPs.
