Absence of secondary osteons in femora of aged rats: Implications of lifespan on Haversian remodeling in mammals

Summary: Bone is a dynamic tissue that can adapt to its loading environment through Haversian remodeling. However, not all animals undergo this remodeling process. This study focused on rats and found that Haversian remodeling does not occur in rats of any age under normal physiological conditions. The lack of remodeling may be due to the continuous modeling of cortical bone throughout the short lifespan of rats.

Intraskeletal consistency in patterns of vascularity within bat limb bones

Summary: Through studying the vascular networks of bat bones, it was found that despite similar canal number per unit volume across bats of different body sizes, differences in canal morphometry were primarily related to an increase in cortical volume. Heavier bats displayed a relatively rich vascular network, with mostly longitudinally-oriented canals localized mainly to the mid-cortical and endosteal bone envelopes.
