In-depth investigation of formic acid pretreatment for various biomasses: Chemical properties, structural features, and enzymatic hydrolysis

Hui Qiao et al.

Summary: Formic acid pretreatment is a promising method for biomass fractionation due to its efficient recycling and removal of hemicellulose and lignin. This study investigated the influence of formic acid pretreatment on woody and herbaceous biomasses, revealing that herbaceous biomass had higher xylan and lignin removal than woody biomass. The study also demonstrated that formic acid pretreatment improved enzymatic efficiency for both herbaceous and poplar biomasses.

A review on organosolv pretreatment of softwood with a focus on enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose

Alankar A. Vaidya et al.

Summary: A clean and efficient fractionation of biomass into cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin streams is crucial in biofuel and biorefinery industries. This review focuses on the organosolv pretreatment specifically developed for softwood as a feedstock and its impact on enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose. It discusses process severity factor, solvent selection, and catalyst choice in the organosolv process, as well as differences between conventional pulping and organosolv pretreatment. The physico-chemical changes that occur in organosolv fractionated cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose are explained, along with the challenges faced by pilot and demonstration scale organosolv treatment plants for commercialization. Future growth and advancement in softwood organosolv processes are also discussed.

5-Sulfosalicylic acid as an acid hydrotrope for the rapid and green fractionation of woody biomass

Qiaolong Zhai et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that 5-sulfosalicylic acid is able to efficiently deconstruct biomass structure and dissolve lignin and hemicellulose, leading to the release of glucose. Under optimized conditions, high lignin removal rate, cellulose recovery yield, and saccharification yield can be achieved.

Supramolecular deep eutectic solvents and their applications

Patrycja Janicka et al.

Summary: In recent years, the development of green and sustainable technologies has gained momentum due to increasing awareness of the harmfulness of chemicals to the environment. Supramolecular deep eutectic solvents (SUPRADESs) are a new subclass of solvents that possess inclusion properties, allowing for selective binding of various chemical compounds. Combining the environmentally friendly properties of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with cyclodextrins, SUPRADESs have the potential to revolutionize the field of green chemistry.

Guidelines for performing lignin-first biorefining

Mahdi M. Abu-Omar et al.

Summary: The valorisation of lignin is crucial for the economic viability of the lignocellulosic biorefining industry. The lignin-first biorefining approach, which considers lignin valorisation in the design phase, has been shown to make the fullest use of lignocellulose. Despite the diverse approaches to reporting and analyzing results from lignin-first methods, we propose guidelines for analyzing critical data in order to facilitate direct comparisons between studies.
