The air pollution disadvantage of immigrants in Germany: partly a matter of urbanity

Ingmar Ehler et al.

Summary: This study examines the air quality disadvantage faced by migrants in Germany compared to people of German descent. It found that migrants, especially second-generation, are exposed to higher levels of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter. The higher urbanization level of their residence partially explains these differences, while income differences do not.

Summary: We investigated the temporal variations in disease burden of PM2.5 and ozone in Italy using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. The study found that while the burden of PM2.5 significantly decreased in Italy, the burden of ozone increased, even in the context of population aging.

Home-school distance among native and immigrant-origin lower secondary students in urban Northern Italy

Debora Mantovani et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of residential proximity to schools on the educational experiences of native and immigrant-origin students. The study finds that although native and immigrant students have a similar tendency to attend schools near their homes, there are differences in some disadvantaged areas. Native families are more likely to choose non-state schools farther from home.

London congestion charge: the impact on air pollution and school attendance by socioeconomic status

Risto Conte Keivabu et al.

Summary: Air pollution has negative effects on individuals' health and academic performance, especially for low-income students. A study on the impact of more stringent traffic regulations in Central London found a decrease in pollution levels but did not show a significant improvement in overall school attendance. However, schools with a higher proportion of low socioeconomic status students experienced a significant decrease in absences.

Unwatched Pollution: The Effect of Intermittent Monitoring on Air Quality

Eric Yongchen Zou

Summary: Intermittent monitoring of environmental standards may induce strategic changes in polluting activities, as shown in this study which documents local strategic responses to a cyclical air quality monitoring schedule. The study reveals that air quality is significantly worse on unmonitored days, suggesting short-term suppression of pollution on monitored days. Additionally, cities' use of air quality warnings increases on monitored days, indicating a role of local governments in coordinating emission reductions.

Air pollution and children's health-a review of adverse effects associated with prenatal exposure from fine to ultrafine particulate matter

Natalie M. Johnson et al.

Summary: Maternal exposure to fine and ultrafine PM during pregnancy can lead to adverse birth outcomes and impacts on children's respiratory system, immune status, brain development, and cardiometabolic health. Policies to reduce maternal exposure and mitigate health consequences in children should be prioritized, along with preventive strategies to inform neighborhood/regional planning and clinical/nutritional recommendations.

East-Side Story: Historical Pollution and Persistent Neighborhood Sorting

Stephan Heblich et al.

Summary: The greater deprivation in the east sides of formerly industrial cities is attributed to historical pollution patterns caused by prevailing winds blowing pollution eastward during the Industrial Revolution. Past pollution explains up to 20% of observed neighborhood segregation in 2011, even though coal pollution ceased in the 1970s. A quantitative model was developed to identify the role of neighborhood effects and relocation rigidities underlying this persistence.

Cheng Keat Tang

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of the London Congestion Charge on traffic conditions and housing values, finding significant improvements in both due to the implementation of LCC. The study suggests that the consequential traffic improvement generated substantial windfall for homeowners in the zone, indicating a strong willingness to pay to avoid traffic congestion.

Summary: This study reveals that children exposed to high levels of traffic-related air pollution and housing-derived lead risk may have lower incomes and higher rates of incarceration or early parenthood as adults. However, different pollutants have similar effects on predicting social mobility, with important disparities in exposure by race.
