Enhancing the mechanical properties of fiber metal laminate by surface treatment

Hang Zou et al.

Summary: This article mainly studies the effects of surface treatment process and material combination on the mechanical properties of glass fiber/polypropylene (PP)/stainless steel mesh (SSM) composite laminates. It is shown that the adhesion force of the phosphating SSM sample is 1.73 times that of the etched sample, and the bonding effect with organic substances is relatively better. The laminate with the structure of unetched SSM + maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene + aminosilane glass fiber fabric had the best tensile load. The etched and phosphatized SSM enhanced the interface adhesive effect with PP-g-MAH, thereby improving the overall structural strength of the laminate.

Guilherme Germano Braga et al.

Summary: Biobased products are important for the efficient use of natural resources and sustainable development. This study investigates the use of grass fibers combined with castor oil polyurethane or epoxy matrices to create biocomposites for fiber metal laminates. The choice of polymer type and fiber length affects the mechanical properties of the composites, and the lower porosity leads to improved performance. Biobased laminates offer potential advantages over epoxy composites and can be used in automotive, civil construction, and aeronautical applications for sustainable industrial designs.

Effect of lamination sequence and warhead shape on impact resistance of fiber-metal laminates

Gang Wei et al.

Summary: This work studied the failure mode and ballistic protection capability of a carbon fiber aluminum alloy laminated target plate under high-speed projectile impact through ballistic impact tests. The impact resistance of the laminated aluminum alloy and carbon fiber laminates was analyzed considering lamination sequence and warhead shape differences. Results showed that the lamination sequence had a significant effect on anti-impact performance only for flat head projectiles, while ovoid projectiles had little effect. In the fiber-metal composite configuration, placing an aluminum plate in front of the carbon fiber plate exhibited the best resistance to flat head bullet impact, with a ballistic limit speed of 135 m/s and a 26% overall improvement in impact resistance compared to other configurations. Unlike flat head projectiles, ovoid projectile impacts caused severe tensile and tear damage.

Summary: The effect of target conditions and number of projectile impacts on the ballistic performance of different materials was investigated. Fiber Metal Laminates and rubber sandwiched targets provided additional resistance, leading to a reduction in projectile velocity. Moving targets altered the penetration behavior of projectiles and caused ricocheting. Multiple projectile impacts gradually reduced ballistic performance.

Summary: This paper extensively investigates the high-velocity impact resistance of lightweight laminates composed of carbon-fibre/epoxy layers sandwiched by titanium alloy skins and aluminium alloy skins.
