SPAD-Based LiDAR With Real-Time Accuracy Calibration and Laser Power Regulation

Dong Li et al.

Summary: This brief introduces a LiDAR imager that utilizes a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) image sensor with a resolution of 32 x 32, a VCSEL-based laser emission system with the same resolution and pixel spacing, and a FPGA for calibration and control. By driving the image sensor and utilizing a gating high-voltage driver circuit, background noise interference is reduced, and real-time accuracy calibration is achieved for the time-to-digital converter (TDC) with a resolution of 200 ps. The proposed LiDAR imager also incorporates a common-cathode driver circuit with narrow pulse, adaptive frequency, and power regulation to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and reduce power consumption. The LiDAR imager can achieve depth imaging up to 10 m with a repeatability error of 10 cm at 10 frames/s.

An Integrated-Circuit Node for High-Spatiotemporal Resolution Time-Domain Near-Infrared Diffuse Optical Tomography Imaging Arrays

Sajjad Moazeni et al.

Summary: In this work, a fully integrated 1.8 x 1.8 mm single chip for noninvasive functional brain imaging was presented. The chip node contained VCSELs, SPAD array with TDCs per row, and a digital back-end for on-chip histogramming and time-gating. The achieved 70-ps resolution for ToF imaging at a 100-MHz laser repetition rate with 80-mW total power demonstrates the potential for high-spatiotemporal-resolution time-domain diffuse optical tomography imaging arrays.

CMOS SPAD Line Sensor With Fine-Tunable Parallel Connected Time-to-Digital Converters for Raman Spectroscopy

Tuomo Talala et al.

Summary: This paper presents a 256-channel single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) line sensor designed for time-resolved Raman spectroscopy. The sensor consists of an $8\times256$ SPAD array and 256 parallel connected time-to-digital converters (TDCs). The TDCs have adjustable temporal resolution and dynamic range, allowing precise timing skew compensation. The sensor is capable of real-time dark count measurement without increasing measurement time.

Solid-State Pulsed Time-of-Flight 3-D Range Imaging Using CMOS SPAD Focal Plane Array Receiver and Block-Based Illumination Techniques

Juha Kostamovaara et al.

Summary: The full realization of a solid-state 3D range imager based on the pulsed time-of-flight method is presented in this paper. The system uses block-based segmented illumination and a single chip 2D SPAD/TDC CMOS array as the receiver. The experimental results show that the system is capable of producing accurate 3D range images at high frame rates under different lighting conditions.
