Investigating and modeling the influence of PET-types on crossing conflicts at urban unsignalized intersections in India

Aninda Bijoy Paul et al.

Summary: Un-signalized intersections in India had the highest number of crashes and fatalities in 2019. The current crash investigation approach is reactive and lacks accurate data. A proactive approach using surrogate safety measures is more promising. This study investigates crossing conflicts at un-signalized intersections in mixed traffic conditions and models them based on traffic flow and intersection geometry-related characteristics.

Modelling traffic safety at uncontrolled median openings: A case study in India

Kshitish Ranjan Mishra et al.

Summary: Assessment of traffic safety is crucial in transportation engineering. In developing countries, limited availability and questionable accuracy of accident data make it necessary to use surrogate traffic safety measures to examine the safety of road users.

Investigation of Crossing Conflicts by Vehicle Type at Unsignalized T-Intersections under Varying Roadway and Traffic Conditions in India

Jaydip Goyani et al.

Summary: The study investigates crossing conflicts at unsignalized T-intersections under mixed traffic conditions using post encroachment time (PET) as a surrogate safety measure (SSM). The presence of motorized two-wheelers (2W) and motorized three-wheelers (3W) in traffic streams is found to increase critical crossing conflicts, with different vehicle type combinations affecting conflict severity. The study establishes PET as a valid SSM by correlating PET values with the speed of conflicting vehicles and comparing severity levels with field-recorded crash data.

Quantification of surrogate safety measure to predict severity of road crashes at median openings

Malaya Mohanty et al.

Summary: In developing countries like India, traffic safety assessment is crucial, and surrogate traffic safety measures have been increasingly used in recent years. By studying PET values at different traffic volume levels in median opening areas, better analysis of traffic safety can be achieved.
