Contemporary Imaging of the Surgically Placed Hepatic Arterial Infusion Chemotherapy Pump

Benjamin S. Strnad et al.

Summary: Hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) of chemotherapy is a locoregional treatment strategy for hepatic malignancy that has been used for metastatic colorectal cancer for decades. Recent attention has been focused on its potential impact on patient survival when combined with systemic therapy in those with unresectable hepatic disease. Radiologists play a crucial role in identifying complications related to HAI devices through imaging, including pump pocket complications, catheter or arterial complications, and toxic or ischemic complications.

Summary: In patients receiving HAI pump therapy, approximately 60% were found to have variant hepatic arterial anatomy (vHAA), significantly higher than the previously reported 19%. The most common variations were accessory left hepatic artery and replaced right hepatic artery.

Hepatic Arterial Infusion Pumps: What the Radiologist Needs to Know

Kyle J. Napier et al.

Summary: Hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) involves the surgical implantation of a subcutaneous pump to deliver chemotherapeutic agents directly to the liver, aiming to maximize hepatic drug concentrations and minimize systemic toxicity for more effective treatment. Radiologists play a key role in the selection and management of patients with complex liver disease who undergo HAI therapy.
