Influence of pulsed Nd:YAG laser oscillation energy on silicon wafer texturing for enhanced absorption in photovoltaic cells

Nurul Huda Abdul Razak et al.

Summary: The influence of Nd:YAG laser's oscillation energy on creating textured surfaces on silicon wafers was investigated in this study. The results showed that the reflectance of multicrystalline silicon wafers was reduced by 15% after laser texturing. The laser texturing process caused structural defects and a laser damage layer on the silicon surface, which affected the lifespan of the photo-generated carriers.

The Effect of Laser Shock Processing on the Anti-Corrosion Performance of LENS-Fabricated Ti-6Al-4V Alloy

Nana Kwamina Kum Arthur et al.

Summary: Titanium alloys have increased oxidation rates at high temperatures, leading to mechanical failure due to the formation of an alpha-case layer at 500°C. To enhance corrosion and oxidation properties, as well as mechanical performance, surface modification is necessary. This study used a LENS 3D-printing system to fabricate titanium alloy samples and employed laser shock processing (LSP) as a surface treatment for property improvement. The LSP-treated samples exhibited enhanced corrosion resistance, further improving the properties of the LENS samples.

Nanosecond pulsed laser surface processing of AISI 301LN steel: effect on surface topography and mechanical properties

Mohammad Rezayat et al.

Summary: The effects of laser treatment on metastable austenitic stainless steel AISI 301LN were studied, focusing on the process variables and responses. The results showed that increasing laser power and decreasing scanning speed led to larger laser track dimensions and rougher surface, while higher heat input induced more martensitic transformation. Tensile properties were not significantly affected.

Improvement of the corrosion resistance of amorphous Ni-P coatings modified by a laser-electrodeposition hybrid process: Effect of morphology evolution on the electrochemical corrosion behavior

Yucheng Wu et al.

Summary: Laser irradiation was used to create a Ni-P alloy surface with three-dimensional microcellular structures, by adding a crystal modifier to the Ni-P electrolyte. The resulting coating maintained its amorphous structure and reduced residual tensile stress, replacing surface crack structures and decreasing corrosion rate by almost four times. The proposed method involved pitting corrosion due to the formation of corrosion microcells caused by electrochemical non-uniformity.

Summary: This comprehensive study explores the multifaceted impact of laser surface texturing (LST) on AISI 301LN stainless steel. The study reveals that LST initiates the formation of strain-induced alpha'-martensite, grain refinement, and substantial hardness enhancements. However, it also leads to reductions in elongation to fracture and area reduction.

Overview of Surface Modification Strategies for Improving the Properties of Metastable Austenitic Stainless Steels

Mohammad Rezayat et al.

Summary: This paper provides a review of various surface treatment methodologies, especially laser treatments, used to improve the mechanical properties of metastable austenitic stainless steels (MASS). The effects of these treatments on the microstructure and chemical composition in the thermal affected zone of MASS are discussed, and their impact on the material's mechanical properties is investigated in detail. The limitations of these treatments are highlighted, and areas for further research are identified. The findings can be used to guide the selection of appropriate surface treatment techniques, ultimately improving the performance and lifespan of MASS in industrial applications.

Measurement of liquid surface tension by fitting the lying droplet profile

Hao Tang et al.

Summary: This study developed a simple drop-shape method to measure liquid surface tension based on curve fitting technique. By solving the 2-D Young-Laplace equation, the explicit droplet profile function was derived, which is superior to the existing approximate profile functions. The proposed method does not rely on any new instrument and is simpler than traditional methods.

Energy storage on demand: Thermal energy storage development, materials, design, and integration challenges

Gholamabbas Sadeghi

Summary: Climate change and increasing energy demand necessitate a shift towards more rational and sustainable energy use, which can be achieved through the deployment of innovative energy technologies. Thermal energy storage plays a significant role in managing the out-of-phase demand and generation of energy. While there are valuable review contents addressing various heat storage methods separately, there is still a need for a concise and comprehensive source of information to present related ideas and applications. The present review paper aims to investigate significant research contributions focusing on practical applications and scientific aspects of thermal energy storage systems, considering design, optimization, and integration challenges at different scales.

Martensite formation during heating from cryogenic temperatures-A phase-field study

Hemantha Kumar Yeddu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the martensitic transformation in stainless steel quenched to cryogenic temperature is influenced by the heating rate, with a slower heating rate leading to a larger martensite volume fraction. The transformation is driven by autocatalysis and coarsening of existing martensite units, with internal stresses being relaxed mainly through autocatalysis during the initial stages and through plastic deformation during the later stages. The temperature required to achieve a certain martensite fraction increases with higher heating rates, consistent with a thermally activated transformation. Additionally, Kissinger-like analysis provides an activation energy of 11.9 kJ/mol for the simulated transformation.
