Revealing the reversible solid-state electrochemistry of lithium-containing conjugated oximates for organic batteries

Jiande Wang et al.

Summary: The solid-phase reversible electrochemistry of oximate organic redox functionality is reported, revealing the complex interplay between molecular structure and electroactivity. The most appealing feature is the reversible electrochemical polymerization during the charge storage process. The best-performing oximate material exhibits a high reversible capacity of 350 mAh/g and achieves a specific energy content of 1 kWh/kg. This study establishes a strong link between electrochemistry, organic chemistry, and battery science.

Isomeric Triptycene Triquinones as Universal Cathode Materials for High Energy Alkali Metal Batteries

Hyunji Park et al.

Summary: Organic electrode materials are suitable for alkali metal batteries due to their unique redox mechanism and flexible molecular structure. In this study, an ortho-isomer of triptycene tribenzoquinone (o-TT) is presented as a universal organic cathode material for alkali metal batteries. By changing the position of the carbonyl group in the benzoquinone units, the redox potentials of TT are enhanced without sacrificing its large specific capacity. o-TT exhibits high energy densities in Li, Na, and K cells due to multi-electron redox reactions and elevated redox potentials. Finally, the cycle stability of o-TT is significantly improved by fabricating composite electrodes with disordered mesoporous carbon (DOMC).

Crystal structure and ON-OFF polymerization mechanism of poly (1,4-phenyleneazine-N,N-dioxide), a possible wide bandgap semiconductor

Gianpiero Gallo et al.

Summary: The crystal and molecular structure of poly(1,4-phenyleneazine-N,N-dioxide) obtained from 1,4-dinitrosobenzene polymerization was investigated using X-ray powder diffraction and DFT calculations. The electronic structure analysis revealed that the polymer possesses wide-bandgap semiconductor properties with a high thermal stability. Photolysis of the polymer at cryogenic temperatures yields monomers which can re-polymerize at higher temperatures, demonstrating a reversible photo-thermal cycle.
