Present status and future directions - irrigants and irrigation methods

Summary: Irrigation is the primary method for cleaning and disinfection of the root canal system, but it faces challenges in eliminating bacteria located in the root canal system's intricate structures. Sodium hypochlorite is the preferred irrigant, and syringe and ultrasonic activation are the most popular irrigation methods. There is no evidence that adjunct irrigation methods can improve treatment outcomes beyond what can be achieved by instrumentation and syringe irrigation. Future research should focus on redefining priorities, investigating the penetration and effects of irrigants, and conducting clinically relevant comparisons.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of different final irrigation regimens on the dentin tubule penetration of three different root canal sealers using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The results showed that AH Plus had the greatest tubule penetration, while Tech BioSealer Endo had the least. Resin-based sealers displayed deeper and more consistent penetration, and CHX irrigation positively influenced sealer tubule penetration.
