A hybrid radioactive and fluorescence approach is more than the sum of its parts; outcome of a phase II randomized sentinel node trial in prostate cancer patients

Esther M. K. Wit et al.

Summary: This study compared the diagnostic accuracy of the hybrid tracer ICG-Technetium-99m(Tc-99m)-nanocolloid with sequential tracers of Tc-99m-nanocolloid and free-ICG in detecting tumor-positive lymph nodes in prostate cancer patients. The results showed that the hybrid tracer approach improved the positive predictive value for tumor-bearing lymph nodes while minimizing the number of fluorescent nodes.

A Fluorescent and Magnetic Hybrid Tracer for Improved Sentinel Lymphadenectomy in Prostate Cancer Patients

Svenja Engels et al.

Summary: This study presents the first in-human case series exploring the use of a fluorescent-magnetic hybrid tracer in a radiation-free sentinel lymph node dissection (sLND) procedure for prostate cancer patients. Both fluorescence and magnetic signals could be detected in all patients, with successful detection of lymph nodes containing metastasis. The results demonstrate the potential of this bimodal approach.

Advancing intraoperative magnetic tracing using 3D freehand magnetic particle imaging

Samaneh Azargoshasb et al.

Summary: This study investigates a novel freehand magnetic particle imaging and navigation modality for intraoperative localization, along with a hybrid approach combining magnetic and fluorescence guidance. The results show that the fhMPI modality has potential for offering 3D imaging and navigation for magnetic nanoparticles in the operating room, and the integration of fluorescence imaging provides visual confirmation of localized nodes. Further clinical evaluation is needed to verify these findings in human patients.

Summary: The study suggests that combining hybrid-SNB technique with robot-assisted radical prostatectomy can enhance the detection of nodal metastases and is associated with lower recurrence rates. The use of hybrid-SNB technique does not increase complication rates.

Intraoperative laparoscopic detection of sentinel lymph nodes with indocyanine green and superparamagnetic iron oxide in a swine gallbladder cancer model

Kisyo Mihara et al.

Summary: In this study, a dual tracer laparoscopic technique using ICG and SPIO was found to be feasible for detecting SLNs of gallbladder cancer in a swine model. The results showed that SPIO nanoparticles more accurately identified each SLN, similar to the standard method using radioisotopes.

Magnetometer-Guided Sentinel Lymph Node Dissection in Prostate Cancer: Rate of Lymph Node Involvement Compared with Radioisotope Marking

Svenja Engels et al.

Summary: Magnetometer-guided sentinel lymph node dissection in prostate cancer patients detected more sentinel lymph nodes per patient and predicted lymph node involvement rates equally well compared to the standard technique. This study confirmed the reliability of magnetometer-guided sentinel lymph node dissection and emphasized the importance of the sentinel technique in detecting lymph node metastases in prostate cancer.
