The komatiite testimony to ancient mantle heterogeneity

Igor S. Puchtel et al.

Summary: Komatiites, crystallized samples of high-temperature and high-MgO lavas, provide important information about the chemical evolution of the early Earth. The isotopic and chemical heterogeneities in these komatiites reflect the co-existence of different post-magma ocean silicate domains, presence of distinct reservoirs, and isotopic exchange across the core-mantle boundary. The study of komatiites reveals the complexity of the Earth's mantle and its composition different from the modern bulk silicate Earth.

Oxidation of La Reunion lavas with MORB-like fO2 by assimilation

R. W. Nicklas et al.

Summary: The oxygen fugacity (fO(2)) in mantle reservoirs is poorly constrained, and this study focuses on the investigation of fO(2) in ocean island basalts (OIBs). By analyzing trace elements in olivine of lavas from La Reunion island, it is found that the variable fO(2) in Reunion lavas is a result of assimilation processes within the volcanic edifice rather than source heterogeneity. It suggests that the Reunion mantle plume likely has fO(2) similar to that of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs), despite isotopic evidence for the plume sampling an early-formed isolated mantle reservoir.

Diffusive equilibration of H2O and oxygen fugacity in natural olivine-hosted melt inclusions

Jennifer Humphreys et al.

Summary: This study investigates the oxidation differences between arc basalts and mid-ocean ridge basalts, as well as the mechanisms through which arc basalts gain their elevated oxidative state. The findings suggest that Fe3+/Sigma Fe measurements may be influenced by the host magma and propose a possible explanation for this phenomenon.

Oxidized mantle sources of HIMU- and EM-type Ocean Island Basalts

Robert W. Nicklas et al.

Summary: This study examines the oxygen fugacity (fO2) of ocean island basalts (OIB) and finds that they have uniformly high fO2 compared to mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB). The control on fO2 is likely the high Fe+3/EFe ratio in the volumetrically dominant mantle component.

Summary: This study unravels the origin of analytical biases in the measurement of the iron oxidation state ratio in MORB glasses and determines an average FeO/FeOtotal ratio of 0.90 +/- 0.02, consistent with previous studies.
