A comprehensive review towards sustainable approaches on the processing and treatment of construction and demolition waste

Shiv Sai Trivedi et al.

Summary: There is a significant increase in global construction industry which has resulted in a huge amount of construction and demolition (C & D) waste. C & D waste, being the largest type of waste, needs to be effectively treated and utilized for sustainable development. Many useful and valuable materials are present in C & D waste, which can be reused as construction materials. However, processing and treatment of C & D waste face challenges due to the variable properties of materials and its bulky nature.

A system dynamics model for assessing impacts of policies on supply and demand of recycled aggregate

Mingxue Ma et al.

Summary: It is urgent to replace virgin aggregate with recycled aggregate due to the high energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions involved in acquiring virgin aggregate. Government policies worldwide have been developed to promote the market for recycled aggregate, but these policies may create uncertainties in supply and demand, potentially hindering its market acceptance. This study uses a system dynamics model to assess the impacts of five policies on the supply and demand of recycled aggregate and concludes that a combination of policies should be considered.

Promoting construction and demolition waste recycling by using incentive policies in China

Chunxiang Hua et al.

Summary: In recent years, construction and demolition (C&D) waste has become a major contributor to municipal waste, causing significant damage to the environment. To address this issue, waste recycling measures and policies have been introduced to promote the C&D waste recycling industry. However, the recycling rate in China remains low. This study aims to promote C&D waste recycling by introducing subsidy and environmental tax policies. Using a system dynamics method, a model was established to determine the appropriate subsidy and tax range. The results provide insights for the government to establish incentive policies for C&D waste recycling.

Factors affecting the price of recycled concrete: A critical review

Mingxue Ma et al.

Summary: The significant increase in construction activities has resulted in a large amount of construction and demolition waste, with recycling being considered the ideal solution. However, the slow adoption of recycled concrete is mainly due to quality and price concerns. Investigating the factors affecting the price of recycled concrete is crucial for controlling the price and improving its financial viability.

Investigation of the optimal price for recycled aggregate concrete - an experimental approach

Dmytro Katerusha

Summary: The use of recycled aggregate concrete can reduce primary resource consumption and waste generation, but price competitiveness is important. The optimal price for recycled aggregate concrete should be between 83.3% and 100% of the regional reference price for conventional concrete, and compensating additional costs can increase willingness to use it. Temporary state aid can promote the use of recycled aggregate concrete and reduce waste and resource consumption.

A dissipative structure theory-based investigation of a construction and demolition waste minimization system in China

Hongping Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigates China's C&D waste minimization system and finds that it is not a dissipative structure, thus unable to form a macroscopic stable and ordered structure through self-organization. Suggestions are proposed to promote the development of the system towards a dissipative structure for more orderly and coordinated system development.

Quantifying the embodied carbon saving potential of recycling construction and demolition waste in the Greater Bay Area, China: Status quo and future scenarios

Ziyu Peng et al.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the embodied carbon saving potential of recycling construction and demolition waste, particularly focusing on the end-of-life stage of construction projects. By adopting a Life Cycle Assessment and conducting a case study in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the research simulates future carbon saving potential under different construction development scenarios, with estimates ranging from 166.34 Mt. to 894.80 Mt. by 2060. The methods proposed in this study can help achieve China's 2060 carbon neutral goal and are applicable to regions worldwide with insufficient C&D waste data.

Barriers to the use of recycled concrete from the perspective of executing companies and possible solution approaches - case study Germany and Switzerland

Dmytro Katerusha

Summary: The study identifies obstacles to the use of recycled concrete and examines the effectiveness of economic policy measures to increase its usage in building construction. The consideration of recycled materials in public tenders and reimbursement of costs when using recycled materials are found to have positive effects, while the recognition of recycled materials by a label has a negative impact. Lack of governmental support and market-related factors are the central obstacles to the use of recycled concrete, highlighting the need for stronger governmental support and training measures in promoting sustainable construction.
