Organophosphine as an Alkyl Transfer Shuttle for the Direct β-Alkylation of Chalcones Using Alkyl Halides

Li-Jie Gu et al.

Summary: We have developed an efficient alkyl transfer strategy for the direct fi-alkylation of chalcones using commercially available alkyl bromides as alkyl reagents. The ortho-phosphanyl substituent in the chalcones plays a crucial role in controlling their reactivity and selectivity, serving as a reliable alkyl transfer shuttle to transform electrophilic alkyl bromides into nucleophilic alkyl species in the form of quaternary phosphonium salts and effectively transferring the alkyl group to the fi-position of the chalcones. This strategy can also be extended to the alkenylation of ortho-phosphanyl benzaldehydes for the synthesis of functionalized polyenes.

Luminescent Peptide/Lanthanide(III) Complex Conjugates with Push-Pull Antennas: Application to One- and Two-Photon Microscopy Imaging

Ji-Hyung Choi et al.

Summary: In this article, a novel microscopy imaging probe based on lanthanide complexes is described. The probe exhibits desirable luminescence properties and cell-penetrating ability for 2P imaging of live cells. By conjugating the lanthanide complexes with cell-penetrating peptides, successful synthesis of the conjugates was achieved and their application in various microscopy imaging techniques was evaluated. The results demonstrate that the probe has proper internalization and cytosolic delivery in cells, while maintaining its original luminescence properties. These findings provide new insights for the development of functional probes for live cell microscopy imaging.

Summary: This study focuses on the low-cost, rapid, and efficient detection of excessive fluoride ions (F-) in water, which can lead to water pollution and pose a health risk. A luminescent single-lanthanide metal-organic framework, EuTPTC-NH2, with uncoordinated amino groups, was developed as a ratiometric fluorescence probe for F- detection. It demonstrated good antiinterference ability, low detection limit, high water stability, and selectivity. A hydrogel membrane based on EuTPTC-NH2 and agarose was also prepared for quantitative visual detection of F- in water.
